I recently was offered the possibility to try no less than nine Ledaig from Gordon & Macphail’s Connoisseurs Choice head-to-head, all distilled between 1990 and 2004 and bottled between 2011 and 2017. Well, that was an opportunity I could not pass up. Let’s give those a go. This is the Ledaig that was distilled in 1993 and bottled in 2011. It matured on refill sherry butts.

The nose is relatively sweet on brown sugar and mocha, toffee and puffed chestnuts. The peat is more or less matured out, it seems, for it is very subtle. Slightly herbal, even a tad floral. But completely flawless, despite being a bit boring.

It’s pretty sharp but rather uninteresting on the palate. Lots of mineral notes and almost astringent. I believe the cask was below par. Sweet on apples an unrefined sugar, almost chemical.

The finish is herbal, spicy and somewhat bitter.

This is a let-down.
