This young Ledaig from Signatory is probably the palest I have tried so far. It is lighter than white wine, almost as clear as spirit. Strange (well, maybe not) considering it matured on a sherry cask. Most likely refill, which explains things. It is a young Ledaig, just under 7 years old, distilled on 21 February 2008 and bottled on 2 October 2014. It was selected especially by The Nectar, a Belgian bottler.

The nose is smoky on the one hand, sweet on the other, but the dominating aroma by far is sauerkraut! Some butane gas and even some plasticine. Becomes somewhat sweeter with fruity notes from the sherry cask. Bitter oranges and some raisins, but they remain in the background. A hint of nuts, getting louder all the time. A typical nose that needs some time, but opens up beautifully. There is a lot going on here.

It is a bit watery, I am afraid. Very light body indeed. Luckily it has a lot to offer on the palate to make up for that. The sauerkraut is almost gone, replaced by vanilla, wet rocks, some farmy elements, light ashes and salted butter. Hint of melon and lemon juice.

The finish is surprisingly long and smoky, with a spicy death.

I always start with low expectations when tasting Ledaig. By now I should know better. I quite like Ledaig, in fact. The price? 40 EUR. Seriously? That is a steal of a deal!
