KAA Gent, the local football club in my neck of the woods, is currently having a terrible season. But if they win, we can celebrate with this whisky, if they lose⦠well, we can still take a good swig. This is the fourth edition of the so-called Smoking Buffalo series. This time, it is a young Ledaig, the peated whisky from Tobermory on the island Mull. Only 294 bottles are available.
Clean, young and fresh nose. Nice mix of smokiness and stable scents (peat, earth, hay) on the one hand and sweet fruit (lemon and melon in the lead) on the other. Some smoked bacon with a big baconrind on the barbecue. Wet rocks. Hints of vanilla and caramel, but also some cod oil. Drop of olive oil. Makes my mouth water.
A rather peppery attack. Yes! The smoke/sweet mix does not need water. Ashes, peat and even some brine are perfectly countered by citrus fruit, lime and grapefruit mostly, and green apples. Very quaffable.
The finish takes longer than kicking the penalties after a tied match, makes you all warm inside in a great mix of lime and big smoke.
Bullseye! Or, to stay within the thema, a great goal. Nice addition to the Smoking Buffalo series. Only 58 EUR, if you are fast enough.
