It is somewhat common knowlegde by now that I have a weak spot for Ledaig. Young Ledaig in particular is something that I really like. I scored this sample of Ledaig Vintage 1996 as a festival. This is not so young, of course, 19 years old. And matured on oloroso sherry casks. I wonder how I will like this one. Sturdy nose on loads of peat, putty, sea breeze and something that reminds me of Vieux Pané, the creamy but wonderfully stinky cheese. Hint of rubber (luckily just a hint). Underneath is a wonderful sweet layer with prunes and sultanas. Also softly seasoned with some black pepper and a pinch of nutmeg. Leaving it to breath relieves it of the rubber and offers more sweetness still. I love it already. It has a good body and the arrival is quite feisty despite the modest ABV. Pepper and nutmeg come first, the pepper is even of the chili kind. Then oranges and prunes, followed by caramel, a tiny bit of honey and nuts. Midpalate aniseed turns up in full force. There is a lot going on here. Exciting. The smoke slowly builds back up in the medium long finish, to die a salty death in the end. Great Ledaig, that easily deals with the sweetness of the sherry casks. Around 140 EUR, but not easy to find in my neck of the woods.
