Liter bottles, yes or no?

@pr0mille I'm 100% with you. All of the reasons you mentioned make 1l bottles a poor choice, compared to 70 cl ones.

I have found that the couple of bottles in litre format I have tend to sit at the back of the cabinet as I just do not gravitate towards them as much due to the reasons you mention. There is a good deal of psychology attached to bottle design and the larger bottles certainly have some negativity attached to them. Although I am sure if it was an emergency I would have no problem adding the larger format bottles to my collection.

@RoganFox In case of emergency I would buy a cardboard cup if it would contain the water of life. Let's just hope neither those or the 1L bottle will be the next standard!

I agree. I really like the nice regular sized bottles. They just look nicer on a bar... but if you have an every day whisky that you revert to on a regular basis, I think buying the bigger bottles is a good deal and you can pour it into a nice decanter, which is also attractive sitting out.

1 liter bottles are more manly. Size does matter.

Right on Wodha. The prices here in Vancouver are such a rip that I now do most of my buying at the duty free when I travel back from Bigside. I've got about a dozen litre bottles in my collection. More bang for the buck, it's all good.

RoganFox. Last time I came through the border I picked up a litre of Arbeg 10 for $48.00. BC Liquor Store price $94.00 for 750ml. I could almost get 2 litres for the cost of one 750ml bottle here. Our other option is to take a cube van to Alberta and load 'er up. Cheers.

Here, in Seattle, most single malts come in the 750ml size. A friend returned from London with a 1l Lagavulin Distiller's Edition and it blew my mind. I like the heft of it. Ever since then I've wanter 1l bottles. To paraphrase Henry Miller, it's "like a lead pipe with wings."

@BlueNote The Alberta trip sounds like a plan !!! I picked up a 1litre bottle of Talisker 10 last time I came though duty free and it too was half the price of a 750 ml bottle.

For the most part, I have only seen the liter bottles at Duty Free shops. Occasionally I'll see one in a regular store but in my area in the US, it is a rarity.

I don't mind the larger bottles, however I only have a few.

The only liter bottle that I've ever seen or handled was a bottle of Captain Morgan my friend bought, I didn't care for it at all, just something about it. I really don't think I'd care for it with a whisky bottle either.

Ardbeg Mor comes in a 4.5 liter bottle. I want one. I don't like big bottles shaped like gallon milk bottles or with handles. I like them in the traditional shape, but bigger.
