I think the entire whisky industry has been getting 'gimmicky' for quite some time! I don't think Ardbeg is a special exception.
My feelings on Ardbeg are that it's one of, if not the best distillery at the moment. While I certainly wouldn't rate everything they do in the 90s, the consistency of quality is impressive. I completely agree that the Galileo was over rated and over priced, but it is a good whisky. Certainly one worth trying I think. Also, I've said this many times but I really respect and appreciate the fact that they don't add colouring to their whiskies. In general, I think whisky prices are getting out of hand, not just Ardbeg. The industry needs to show it's customers more respect in my opinion.
The Ardbog?... Yeah I'll probably pick one up ;)

I bought 2 bottles of Galileo when it came out. And, I was not a fan. Now I have a 2nd hundred dollar bottle that I don't like, and I see Galileo fore sale on-line EVERYWHERE.
Normally, I would buy 2 Ardbogs, but, to quote one of our most intellectual presidents, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me. You can't get fooled again."

Hey I'm not even sure what Ardbog is what makes it different from the typical ardbeg line? I could look it up but I like to hear Connosr opinions.

Here's a little info to answer a few questions asked above:

@onibubba sorry I meant to hit the thumbs up for your "won't get fooled again" comment, but, butter fingers here missed and got thumbs down by mistake. Unfortunately it won't let me correct it.

Hmmm... The best Ardbeg since Airigh Nam Beist the link says. I'm enticed now, but I really should resist.
11 years ago 0
I suspect it will be overpriced. And that I won't be able to resist it.

Haha! Yes @Onibubba! We should never misunderestimate the words of such a great man ;)

When you're a viper, even too much peat is not enough.
As for the price of Ardbog:
When your throat get dry you know you're high Everything is dandy Truck on down to the candy store Bust your konk on peppermint candy
Then you know that you're body's spent. You don't care if you don't pay rent. Sky is high and so am I If you're a viper.

For what it's worth, here's the second review of Ardbog I've seen (after the one @two-bit cowboy posted):

Without having previously tasted it, this sort of release is always about price for me. I would never have paid $ 100 blind for Galileo, but was happy to try it at $ 73. I have the same attitude toward Ardbog.

@Victor, Ardbog will be available in Maryland liquor stores from 6/1/2013 for $68.

@DevD, is June 1 a universal release date? I already have bids out here, but there are still local politics involved. The $ 73 I mentioned includes the tax here, actually $ 74.11 total for the Ardbog.

@Victor AFAIK June 1st should be the general release date: www.ardbeg.com/ardbeg/ardbogday (all of the countries down the left on that page have June 1 as The Day)

I'll probably buy a bottle or two if and when it becomes available locally... Overpriced whisky is something I'm used to, so no worries there. ;)

@PeatyZealot Nothing wrong with drugs. Just use common sense. Nothing in the world better than medicinal MJ. And common sense says, after the disastrous Galilleo, it this is priced over 100.00, pass. For that price you could get (in the US) an Oban 18, an HP 18, any of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (coming in just a few months), an excellent Yoichi 15...Many more. I think I am going to pass.

Once again @Onibubba you and I are on the same page my friend. ; ) Except for the fact that I will be picking up at least one bottle of the Ardbog. Really want to give it a try!

Gosh, I'd love to be able to pick one up at ~$75 a bottle, though I'm sure it'll be at least double that in Australia, if it makes it here..

Was lucky to get a sneak preview of this at a local store. I think this will be a big hit. Enjoyed it a lot more than Galileo, Alligator, and a bit better than Ardbeg Day. It is more elegance than power, and strikes a fine balance of peat and sherry. Lovely aromas of candied nuts, smoke, and varnish. Very, very good.

I had my first dram of Ardbog last night, was saving it a few days to share with my father over revealing our baby we are expecting in fall is a BOY. Am very pleased that I picked Ardbog for the occasion as it may be the best Ardbeg I've had and he agreed. I had consumed a few beers and shots and smoked a cigar so my pallet had lot going on. I'm going to try it next to Uigeadail and do a full review. To me last night it was a nice deep smoked peat with this salted caramel sweet finnish, extremely smooth. It's retailing at $100 here in IOWA and worth every penny. Love the box stories and embossed copper images, they did nice job on package. Too bad it's limited with only 5k cases world wide. We got 84 bottles for in Des Moines metro area a population of 250k so they won't last long. I do believe it is better than the Galileo so will try to pick up another bottle to hold on to a bit.

@Onibubba Haha yes I experimented some myself, but Rigo's post was sooo unfathomable. Ardbeg does very well in marketing! They manage to sell 10 year olds with a sherrycaskfinish of a few months for the price of an 18 year old CS. Good for them and the Embassy-followers, but I'm not falling for it (yet)

Here in NC I was told I had to buy a case to get it. At $99 a bottle I guess I will have to past. It looks like Uigeadail for me. We just got it here in NC, special order but you can buy it by the bottle. I must say while I was not totally blown away by the 10 at first I've been pining for it since my initial taste. I'm intrigued I must say and now I'm ready for the Uigeadail!

I can appreciate your feelings about the Ardbeg 10 @Bigtuna, it is one of a handful of whiskies that I actually find myself craving ; )

So what's the verdict...worth $100? It's arriving at retailers now...need to decide if I should pull the trigger.

I probably won't be buying a bottle, but I'm certainly curious if anyone here has and could provide us with some brief words about it. So far I haven't been able to find any reviews or very good tasting notes on it. I've tried 5 Ardbeg Scotches now, and I loved all of them, but I think their whiskies are becoming a little overpriced now and also somewhat gimmicky. Now that I think about it, I haven't loved all of them. I wasn't totally in love with Ardbeg Galileo. It's good, but it was pricey and it just wasn't worth that kind of money. I've realized now that if I'm going to be putting that kind of money down I should be paying for quality rather than rarity. Ardbog is available now near me for $100, and that's just too much money to spend on something that I haven't even seen reviewed yet. So, I was just wondering if anyone else has bought it or is planning to do so.
