Lot No 40 released its first cask strength edition in 2017, with an age statement of 12 years. Just a few bottles shy of 5000 were released. Thanks to my buddy Robert from Québec, I was able to give this one a try.
The nose is a lot sweeter than the ‘regular’ Lot No 40, but shows the same woody notes and even offers an edge that reminds me of varnish. Luckily, some creamy notes as if from overripe banana and maraschino cherries kick in. Surprisingly soft on the spices front. Some black pepper, a hint of cinnamon and a lost clove, but not much else. A fresh touch of mint. The nose becomes more interesting after a few moments, so give it some time.
Wow! On the palate, this is a bomb! The rye now give a whole range of spices, chili powder included. Cherry liqueur in dark chocolate (Mon Chérie), almond cake and a hint of caffé latte. Some pipe tobacco.
The finish is a tad too short to my liking, but it does remain interesting with lots of oak and even some woodsmoke.
I hears left and right that this was absolutely stunning. I am less enthusiastic. Sure, it is lovely, but not a lot more interesting than other Canadians I have tried. I certainly do not feel the urge to go look for a bottle.
