For the composition of this 3rd Edition, whisky maker Bob Delgarno collaborated with the well-known Master Perfumer Roja Dove, who had previously helped Macallan with the development of their aroma kit. This is a blend of six cask types in which the aroma will most likely be very important.

The nose is wonderfully sweet, but also a bit delicate. Bergamot oil, wilde flowers, vanilla, mokatine, heather honey, sweet butter and oranges. Becomes quite elegant on dried apricots, sultanas and some peach. A bit of maple syrup over vanilla ice cream. Spice-wise, I’m thinking cinnamon and cloves. Very, very nice.

It caresses the palate. Silky soft at first, but that does not last. It quickly becomes more sturdy. The spices kick in and the fruit explodes on the palate. A veritable taste-bomb, but powerful. Much more outspoken than the nose predicted. Gingerbread and dark fruit, a hint of candied grapefruit and some warm garden herbs. Thyme? But the fruit takes the lead and evolves towards apricots, sultanas and apples with some brown sugar.

The finish can easily be called long, with a warm and spicy edge, but also a bitter, tannic death.

Lovely Macallan that develops like a three stage rocket. A soft, delicate nose; a powerful palate and a drying, tannic finish. But the whole works like a charm. Recommended. I really am sorry for not having purchased the first two Edition releases. They are better than their standard range and still quite affordable.
