Made a decision about being a geek

In replying to another thread I have come to a conclusion that being an addictive personality coupled with the upward spiral of whisky prices has taken most of the "fun" out of trying to keep up with the Joneses. Pun intended. Not too long ago it was a big step to buy a $100 bottle of the finest. That figure has basically doubled in the past year or so( ex HP 18 etc), Oh I realize there are still the odd bottles that are a "bargain" but they are few and far between. Recently I have complained about the my lack of interest in sites such as this one but now realize my lack of enthusiasm really hinges on the thought that I am being foolish in trying to keep up with the whisky bubble and that I am being taken for a fool. My Grandfather used to have a plaque on his wall that said " We are too soon Old and too late smart' another one said " A fool and his money are soon parted". These statements are not meant to be a condemnation of others on this site. Their pockets are very likely quite a bit deeper than mine. I guess what I am saying is that sites such as this one keep me charged up and persuade me to buy bottles that I don't need and can't afford to enjoy a better quality of life. I have decided to cancel all of the whisky related sites that I frequent and get back to being a mundane rum drinking regular type of guy. Have enjoyed talking with many of you over the past few years. Still hope to meet my friends (you know who you are) some day. Wishing everyone all the best Jonesz

If Connosr had never existed, I would probably be a few thousand dollars richer and many dozen bottles poorer. I would suggest that my association with this site is the single most powerful force driving my accumulation of whisky and without it my "hobby" probably would have petered out.

Now with Connosr friends and acquaintances there is always a desire to be able to present something that no one else has tried, or we try something and if it can be found it needs to be bought.

I envy those people who can buy a single bottle of the latest star expression and drink it, knowing something good will be along when they need a new bottle. I can't do that. If I have something I like I need a couple for the future. But at this rate the future will never come for most of these, all of which I so wanted to drink.

Life would be so much more simple if not for this site. But on the other hand, I've met some people that I otherwise would not have and on that you just can't put a price...

Can't say I blame you @Jonesz.

@Nozinan. I think you and I might need counselling. :-)

No, not counselling. Just a backbone to be able to keep from having to buy each new expression. I've done well since July. Aside from one bottle I'm holding for a friend, my net total is unchanged.

@Jonesz, my father's father used to tell him, "They can make it faster than you can drink it." and "You can't find the answer at the bottom of a bottle." Yes, they will make more than we will ever drink, and there are no answers here, just enjoyment. But that enjoyment does not, even now, need to cost a fortune. Many of us are very cautious in what we will pay for whisky. Shop carefully and you can stay in the game indefinitely. As for trying to get a bottle or a taste of everything new which comes into existence, that is a difficult thing to do, approaching a full-time job. To come remotely close to tasting "everything" new which comes out I think that you need to be a professional in the industry. Why bother? Just drink what you like when you are able.

Well put @Victor . Being picky with your purchases and not buying into hype is a good way to keep your costs low and enjoyment high! Though I totally agree this can be very difficult. I'm sad to see you go @jonesz

Thanx all for your input. Will sharpen my pencil and be more selective in my choices. Most of my purchases in the foreseeable future will be bourbons purchased while snowbirding this winter. Hope to enjoy quite a few that are unobtainable here. May sneak in the odd Bookers though just to treat myself to the best bourbon I have tasted to date. I am thinking that I am done buying scotch unless a real bargain shows up although I do have quite a few on hand. So that's it for now, decided to quit tormenting myself with these sites as I was getting to be like one of Pavlov's dogs and can't seem to stop the drool. Will stop in once in awhile to see how the connosrs are doing. Bye for now and once again thanx for the input and all that I have been able to learn from the members here. Jonesz

I came across this thread and read my reply from 6 years ago. If only I had known them that my cabinet would expand farther than I could possibly imagine… maybe that would have helped me out on the breaks a bit.

In any case, I have made some great friends because of this site. I stand by my previous statement that you can’t put a price on that.

But I do feel the pressure to have something special for my pals when we meet up. It’s getting harder because I have no room to put new bottles. I still have a couple of ticks ip my sleeve though…

Well what a coincidence! Over the past few years I have curtailed my whiskey (scotch) purchases and have whittled my cabinet down to less than 30 bottles. These are ones that I cannot replace due to being unavailable on the cold frozen prairies or too expensive for me. However, I must say that I have been missing some of the fun that I once had trying different expressions and reading reviews by other folks, along with the virtual friends met on this site. During my last visit for a medical had a discussion with my Dr., also a whiskey nut and he told me that a little bird had informed him that the local MLCC store was having 6 bottles of Blanton's single barrel delivered for a special promotion. So I went down and talked to the store manager who was gracious enough to put my name on two of them. They were not to be released till March 18th so I had to wait a week to pick them up. Anyway long story short, there were some other bourbons on a spring special so picked up several Wild Turkey 101's, a couple of Elijah Craig small batch, 2 Knob Creek small batch 9 YO, a Buffalo Trace and a Larceny just to take for a test drive on bourbons. I mentioned in my initial comments on this thread that I liked Bookers but found that while it was once approx 70 bux that now it is currently $140 Cdn tax included so passed on that one. I immediately took a liking to WT101 and as it was on sale for $30 Cdn think that it was a great buy at the time. All this kind of makes me wish that I still had my Knob Creek Single Barrel (60 % ABV) that I traded to Paddockjudge back in the day. It was not in my wheelhouse at the time but I'm thinking my taste buds have changed as have really been enjoying the taste of bourbon. So, the hunt is now on to extend my bourbon cabinet while some offerings are still affordable! After my ramble about my grandfathers wall plaques I seem to recall someone telling me that "you can't take it with you" so am going to untie the purse strings again and enjoy savouring some american whiskies that I used to snobbishly disregard. Have been reading some reviews on this site and glad that my password still hooked me up to reply to Victor and Nozinan. Anybody know where I can find some WT Rare Breed (G)

@Jonesz the rare breed can be found in Calgary. Zyn.ca. If you tell them I sent you you can have it for $65. If you don’t mention me, it’s the same price…

And if you can’t find a KCSB, I might be able to dig one out of my stash…

Thanks Nozinan, I see they also have Russell's reserve 10YO.That is also on my list. Does Zyn have a storefront or just online sales? Will be through Calgary in July. Good to see some of the old crew are still hanging around.

@Jonesz it's very nice to see you back in the Connosr conversation. I hope that you continue to remain in touch.

It's funny with money and whiski. There is much to appreciate at all price points. We do the best with what we have. It is a very rich world to enjoy.
