Micil (pronounced 'mikhil') Distillery in Galway, Ireland, is named after Micil Mac Chearra who already distilled poitin in Connemara in 1848. Poitin is a form of Irish new make. His great-great-great-grandchildren Padraic and Jimin now make poitin and gin from Irish barley. While they wait for their own whiskey – 3 years of maturation, remember? – they already have sourced whiskey in their portfolio, which they finish and bottle themselves. But we prefer to stick to their original poitin, of which I got a sample through my good friend and Ireland fan in heart and soul Benny.
The nose is wonderfully creamy and soft, with only a hint of cooked vegetables, but quite a few juicy pears. Very clean. Very nice, indeed.
On the palate it is silky soft and again nice and creamy. The pears return and are helped with a touch of white chocolate. Soft pepper, light hint of green garden herbs. Impressively clean, though.
In the rather short finish, it retains its creaminess and the pepper is pronounced a little more.
Perfectly suited for drinking neat, although I think he would also do well in a cocktail. Thx, Benny.
