Prima Vinum, a Belgian whisky shop, selected a sherry butt that was put to sleep in 2007 at Douglas Laing, containing spirit from the lesser known Miltonduff distillery. They had it bottled last August exclusively for their shop.

Dark and sweet, fruity and creamy nose on bread pudding, raisins, candied sugar and sweetened buttermilk. Some sniffing tobacco, milk chocolate, Brésilienne nuts, roasted chestnuts and popcorn with caramel. A liquid dessert.

It is syrupy on the palate, you can almost chew it. Immediately very sweet and piquant on cloves and chili pepper. Again some raisins, but now joined by some candied orange peel, nectarines and more nuts that the nose promised. Wonderfully round and rich. I would have guessed this to be at higher strength.

Long, sweet finish on soft spices that linger very long. Nothing drying or bitter at the death, but a feisty sweetness.

Wonderfully sweet and aromatic Speysider, like we’ve seen a few in last months. But I never grow tired of this profile. Simply fantastic stuff.
