The Lonach series was known for vatting underproof with overproof casks to create a whisky that reached at least 40% ABV and could thus be bottled. This one was bottled at exactly 40% and is a distillate from 1971. Nowadays, Lonach claims to no longer use underproof casks. Anyway, let us get to it!

Two things immediately jump out on the creamy nose: vanilla and pineapple. Then some banana with brown sugar and a bit of oak. This is 37 years old? Could have fooled me! This is very fruity. Some oranges in the mix, as well as apricots. Mildly burnt aroma that I cannot quite pinpoint, but not an off note at all! A bit of menthol. Wonderful!

The arrival is mild and oily, lacking some punch. Immediately very sweet. White fruit and citrus, drenched in honey. Midpalate the oak arrives in full force suddenly giving him the punch it needs. White pepper and cinnamon. Slowly but surely becomes somewhat drying, but not so much that it disturbs.

The finish, that remains sweet, dies on oranges and oak with a sudden touch of ginger.

Oh, boy, Mildonduff clearly is one of those unknown distilleries that need to be discovered more, for they do create beautiful whisky.
