@Wodha I agree I also keep a bottle of the Aberfeldy 12 in my cabinet. This whisky often overlooked and is good for guest who don't drink whisky. :)

Ledaig 10. Not much spoken about, but it's a nice whisky. Nose is quite unusual, you either love it or hate it. Taste wise it's quite ashy and peaty.

@goldfilm I wouldn't say Highland Park 12 is underated. It's hailed as the finest whisky in the world by many.

Very interesting thread with good hints. Added some to my wishlist. But @MacBaker62 you made me really curious about the Ellenstown. I need more info, can't even find a shop to buy it from... There are just some random reviews online but thats all for me. Not even TWE is offering.

Btw I completely second @A'bunadhman: For me the Ardmore TC is an underrated whisky though a great one.

For those who don't scoff at blends, Johnnie Walker Swing might come as a pleasant surprise. It's the ignored member of the Walker range, which I find puzzling. Next to the rapidly vanishing Green Label, it's the best JW out there, according to my taste buds. And if you don't like the whisky, you get a cool bottle anyway.

Tasted McCarthy's 2013. It's way better than the 2012. Two thumbs up.

@Wills In regard to your inquiry about Ellenstown 10, it has come to my attention that this "branded" Single Malt, isn't as widely availible as I had assumed. I live in a midsize city in the middle of the US, and I've seen bottles of this on the shelves of two of our biggest local wine retail merchants.

I first sampled Ellenstown 10 at a Scotch tasting that featured whiskies from Islay, at the flagship store of a local chain called "The Wine & Cheese Place". At the time of the tasting, they had several bottles of this "hidden malt" for sale. www.wineandcheeseplace.com

The second time I saw and this time bought a bottle to take home, was at another whisky tasting at a local retail icon "The Wine Merchant". winemerchantltd.com

Both times, the general consensus of the tasting audience was that this was sourced from Ardbeg, with a very small minority guessing it might be from Laphroaig. I'm a fan of both, and this tasted much more like 1st and 2nd fill bourbon casks aged Ardbeg, than any Laphroaig I've tasted. The fact that is was cask strength and priced the same as Ardbeg 10, made the decision to purchase this easy!

I don't know if any of this information is useful, but I hope it helped in some way.

@ewhiskey - You're very right, the 12 is a great dram. I'm from Montreal myself, and I know that the SAQ est cher en osti! So any decent dram that sells for less than $75 is a winner back home. Benriach's range is quite cheap here in Taiwan, too. It's one of my favorite distilleries because they have such a diverse portfolio. It's hit and miss, but you gotta love that they try. Also, you mentioned the Curiositas and the Aromaticus Fumosus, both lovely peated drams. I just opened a bottle of the Authenticus 21 year peated, I'll be writing a review on it quite soon. Lovely peaty punch without Islay prices. Good stuff, and you're spot on with your review of the 12.
