At the booth of The Nectar at the Spirits in the Sky Festival two new Irish expression were shouting out to be tried. Unfortunately my palate was already tired, but luckily I brought enough sample vials with me to take them home. They are totally different whiskey’s, cause this one is unpeated – selected for the festival – while the other is peated. I will put them head-to-head (what is the use?), starting with this unpeated one from 1993.
The nose is sweet with a whiff of exotic fruit. That quickly becomes more than a whiff – a lot more. Banana, peach, passion fruit, marzipan. Softly spicy and quite waxy. A touch of eucalyptus, too. Yes, this is very good, soft and accessible. Seductive, even.
It is quite creamy on the palate and suggests a finish. Caribbean rum, maybe? It is very fruity with all the exotic fruit from the nose and much more. The spices are somewhat louder than on the nose: cinnamon, licquorice and again some eucalyptus.
The finish is very long, sweet and only mildly drying towards the end.
Wonderful! I have no doubt in my mind that this is a Bushmills. It costs around 140 EUR and is worth every cent.
