New Year Resolutions

What are your whisky-related (or general life) resolutions for the new year? I don't usually make resolutions - I believe that if one is committed enough to something, it will be done regardless and there is no need to make a "resolution" in that case. And we all know how well people stick to their resolutions...

That aside, the things I'll be doing this year:

Sample 100 new whiskies. Only managed a paltry 40 new whiskies in 2013. Make my own malt whisky Gardening. Lots of gardening. Be fitter than I've ever been.

Anyone want to share theirs?

I think 1 and 4 may be a contradiction.

My resolution is to lose enough weight to fit into my wedding suit before the next formal event I have to be ready for in April. That's about 10 pounds.

My whisky resolution is to try to open some of the bottles that have been waiting a long time and to stabilize my purchasing vs drinking, which means drastically cutting down on purchases, or.... well, cutting down on purchases.

I would resolve to drink more often (my wife teases me that my alcohol problem is a "non-drinking" problem), but I'm not limited by desire, just by opportunity, so I know if I resolve to have 2 drams a week I'm bound to fail most of the time.

But I do plan to continue to focus on enjoying good whiskies, broaden my horizons as far as I can, and maybe give away or trade some of the bottles I collected when my tastes were less defined, and which I probably wouldn't go for now.

@Nozinan Thanks for sharing. I wish you all the best in your quest to lose those extra pounds and to manage your whiskies better.

Like you, my wish to try more whiskies is not limited by desire. With two young kids, work and other responsibilities I'm limited by opportunity. I don't think 100 new whiskies is an unreasonable goal - I have lots of samples to open and will be going to at least one whisky event so that could knock off 10 or 15 new whiskies in one hit. After that, it's about 1.5 drams per week so maybe 45ml or 50ml per week of whisky which I don't believe is at odds with my quest to become fit - I just don't see how those two goals are contradictory.

When you put it that way it seems quite reasonable. Personally I'm lazy. If I spent half the time I do with one small dram on the treadmill I'd need to eat my way UP to my wedding weight.

If all you're doing is samples all year then at 2 drams a week you'll hit 100, or less as you say with the festival. That would be an awesome yearlong adventure.

I plan to find a balance between exploring new stuff (I hope to make it to a festival in May) and sitting back and enjoying stuff I know I really like. I remind myself that I'm playing the long game, so I will likely get to try most of what is in my cabinet sometime in the next 2 decades, and so I should sit back with one or two of my favourites. Remember, I'm lazy.

Your way sounds adventurous. I hope we'll be reading about it this year.
