With demand for Japanese whisky easily trumping what’s on the market, the larger producers (Nikka & Suntory) have taken all age statement expressions of the market. Until they have stocks that have reached a respectable age again, we have to make do with NAS releases. This Yoichi (from the Nikka stables) was finished on bourbon casks. Delicious full nose on leather, vanilla, strawberries and a touch of pepper. But so soft! Softer than a baby’s bum, truly! Bread spread, woodsmoke, some oriental incense. Simply wonderful. Less sweet than the nose promised, but nicely balanced on the palate. It dances on the tongue. Some white fruit (apples, pears), vanilla and lovely notes of wood without being oaky. Pretty herbal with some mint. Very nice. The finish may be somewhat short, but it’s refreshing. Who cares about age when whisky is this good. And a real Japanese to boot! But around 180 to even 200 EUR for this bottle, is ridiculously expensive.
