Do your online homework and you'll find a reseller that will ship to your state. I live in Washington state and found there's a few resellers that won't whip here but an equal number that will. WTF? It's worth the homework if you find one as in my case, I've tried most the ones the WA State Liquor Board sell and wanted to try something outside the offerings.

I would be very careful about ordering online. I live in Virginia too. It is definitely legal to bring in your alcohol for personal use (that is not for resale) up to a certain amount, I believe 4 liters. I believe it is also legal to have wine shipped to you but alcohol is another story. I would be surprised if many out of state merchants would even be willing to consider shipping it to you. I think your best bet is to travel to DC or Montgomery County, MD which are nearby and have a better selection. This may not be that easy if you live far away from DC though.

I don't know how it is in other states but I know in Texas that the SMWS has designated retailers that they ship your bottles to when you order it. You actually pay for it at the liquor store. This is because it is illegal in Texas to ship spirits to a person's home from out of state. This is something that I've only ever seen the SMWS society do, so for any other online retailer you're probably out of luck. I'm sure they do something similar in all restricted states, but I'd contact the Society before you actually order anything as all states are different.

@mikelrtx - I live in Texas too, howdy. This process was a newspaper topic locally around Christmas. And I don't believe the article covered the process of the order being shipped to the liqour store and buying it there. This is interesting and I'm going to check this out with my liqour store. Thanks

@WPT - I placed an online order with Master of Malt in the UK, and miraculously the local post office delivered the "contraband" to me! Well, actually I had to go pick it up from them, as it was shipped priority mail and I missed the initial delivery. I was well pleased! Shipping cost a bit, but I got what I couldn't find anywhere locally!

I don't know if this will help you in Virginia since I am not familiar with the laws there, but as for quality on-line retailers that ship, I have had great results with the following; - The Whisky Shop in San Francisco (great selection!) www.whiskyshopusa.com - and for items that you just can't find in the US, there is a wonderful little whisky shop in Inverary, Scotland (West Coast on the way to the Islay Ferry) that can ship to your local post office. www.lfw.co.uk I was in the shop this past September and was surprised when the gentleman offered to ship the Whisky to me so I wouldn't have to carry it home. I told him I wasn't aware that it could be done. He stated that he could and even guaranteed to refund my money if I didn't receive it. A week after I got home from Scotland, the 2 bottles arrived. As someone else mentioned, the shipping is not cheap, but for that special bottle that I can't get in the U.S., it's worth it and it's a lot cheaper than a trip to Scotland (even though I would go back in a heartbeat)!

Does anyone have advice about ordering SMSW online in the US when you live in a restricted state? I'm in Virginia -- where the state runs all liquor stores and shipping is restricted. I try to buy single malt when I am traveling (picked up Highland Park 12 in Florida last week -- they don't sell it in Va.; and got HP 18 yr in Maryland). But I'd love to hear about anyone else's experience ...
