Ah, Pittyvaich… I have a soft spot for this malt. The distillery didn’t last long, though. It was built in 1974 by Arthur Bell’s & Sons, but was closed already in 1993. The Pittyvaich 12 Year Old in the Fauna & Flora series had only been released two years prior to closure. But in the Diageo Special Releases it is already the fourth time that we can welcome this Speysider. Apparently 1989 was a very busy year, for we were treated to a 20 years old in 2009, a 25 years old in 2018 and last year saw the release of an outstanding 28 years old. Hence, this release was secretly the one I was most looking forward to.

Delicious nose on pomelo and yuzu, yellow potpourri, baking banana and chestnut with a bit of sweet butter. Some caramelized ginger and some toffee and heather. I am in seventh heaven.

Sweet and sour with a silky soft texture. Turkish Delight, Christmas Cake spices, sultanas and candied ginger. Again that floral side. I really like this. Some overdone fruit tea without becoming really tannic. Nice bitterness. Mildly drying. Good balance.

The finish is almost long, soft with some ginger and citrus at the death.

Pittyvaich keeps surprising me in a pleasant way. I’m very happy to have scored a bottle.
