Proof Brands markets this whisky, a rum, and a vodka. The company says this is made from rye and wheat, and is aged in charred oak barrels. Whether or not the barrels or new, or whether there are additional grains in the mashbill is not disclosed. There is no age statement on the bottle.

Nose: substantial aroma, sweet, fruity, lemon citrus, a little apple, pear, and maybe apricots. The nose is not too smooth.

Taste: sweet, pear, apple, caramel, lemon, rye spice. It is hard to taste any wood here. The rye spice is rather strong, but is submerged under the sweet and lemon-sour cover flavours. This has a lot of 'tart' to go with all of the sweet.

Finish: the spice exits after a short time, leaving a 'sweet and sour' finish.

Balance: These flavours are rough and ready--ready to go into the cocktails, probably. Nothing here is very refined, gentile, subtle, or smooth. The balance is a peculiar one that will probably not appeal strongly to very many people. My sister loves this stuff and can't get enough of it. This is a little rough for my taste, sipped neat. The rye is noticeable if you look for it, but the wheat flavours are invisible, and the wood flavours are just about invisible as well.

Additional comment to the review: this is a Canadian whisky, for those who are unfamiliar with the Proof brand.

...and we have another use of the word 'melange' - I'm impressed!

20 months after the bottle was opened, this Proof Whisky is actually BETTER! Odd,...of course Proof Whisky was odd to begin with. The nose is really nicely fruity now, and the whisky is much sweeter on the palate than at first, giving better balance. This would actually rate an 80 from me at this point, something I would not previously have believed... and not that I would buy it to be aging it for 20 months.

I just posted my review of this one, which I only tried for the first time this spring. @Victor, it was quite a unique whisky for me - have you tasted any other whiskies in your experience that have been similar in profile?

@JasonHambrey, no I haven't tasted much which I would describe as similar to Proof Whisky. My sister loves that stuff! She is one of the very few, as far as I can tell. She usually likes anything which is very citrusy. I can enjoy Proof Whisky once in a while, but most Connosrs I know tend to run the other direction away from it at the mention of the name. What I have had of it, from about three different bottles, purchased in 2011, has been...rough.
