Early 2019 this 17 year old Irish whiskey ā€“ of which the distillery is kept secret ā€“ was bottled by German indie Rold Kaspar for the Hotel Essener Hof in Essen, Germany. Bottler and hotel cooperate often to give tastings of whisky, but also gin and other distillates.

The nose prickles a bit, but immediately offers some very candy-like and tropical notes. Feels like Iā€™m smelling some mango and kiwi flavored ice-cream, drenched in syrup of pineapple and peach. After a few moments some grassy notes and nuts appear. Deliciously summery.

The tropical fruit returns on the palate, albeit in a very candy-like shape, almost like chewing gum. It cannot fulfil the tropically fruity promise of the nose, but is still quite pleasant. On the edge of, but not quite reaching, guimauve. Feisty with pepper to give it some punch.

While nose and palate are quite alright, the finish is a tad too bitter and try to please.

Well, the patrons of the 4-star Esserner Hof are quite lucky to find this on the shelf. Lovely single cask Irish whiskey for a reasonable price. You can still find this today for around 100 EUR.
