Scotch with Leather taste?

0 17

fabio16 started a discussion

Hi I'm found of the old Glendronach 21 Parliament, due to the Leather taste and polish it used to have. the new bottle not so much. Any other scotch out there you know of that has this flavor profile?

Some sherried Mortlachs might do the trick. I've never had one that seemed leathery to me, but I'm sure I've seen that in reviews on occasion. But it's gotta be a sherried one, not a bourbon-cask maturation.

Leather? Bowmore, hands down. Most of the Bowmores have it as almost the signature for the distillery, e.g. Bowmore 12. Many people hate that Bowmore leather note. I don't.

@Victor I've never tasted leather in Bowmore. I dislike the 12 for other reasons.

Leather and polish tend to be the results of aging, so you're more likely to find it in some malts above 20 years.

@fabio16 , I just happened to come across this old review that quotes a lot of leather in the Ardmore Traditional Cask. That TC has since been replaced by something much more generic (the "Legacy," if I'm not mistaken), but I still see that TC kicking around sometimes.

@MadSingleMalt It mentions leather, mostly as in "there isn't much leather".

@MadSingleMalt

@Nozinan , did you see the same notes of "heavy leather," "old leather saddle," and "more leathery like Lagavulin" there that I did?

Granted, there is a complaint that it's not as leathery as Lagavulin. From which I conclude, we should also suggest Lagavulin for @fabio16 —yes?

Thanks @MadSingleMalt for the suggestions! Also @Nozinan and @Victor . The Mortlach would interest me, as I'm more of a Sherry fan then peat. I do enjoy some peat but more like Laphroaig and Benromach, I stay clear of Ardberg and talsker. (Too much herbal peat). The Ardmore should be close to Benromach but with leather , I'll try that.

Here are a couple I found with leather : Ancnoc 24 ( but not much Sherry) Glengoyne 25

I'll continue on my search but do let me know if anything comes up

It's sweet enough to please the ladies who would turn up their noses at the presence of charcoal, heavy leather.... - This implies less, not more leather.

No dominant leather note as in Lagavulin - forgive me if I didn't feel it promoted leather as a star player.

Then again, With time the nose turns more leathery like Lagavulin.

@Rigmorole was quite used to causing such @Conundrum(s).

I got no leather in my Ardmore Traditional Cask.

As the author was unreliable and I actually tasted this expression several times, I'll stick to the no leather whatsoever script.

Well, @fabio16 , I guess you got some conflicting opinions to sort through here. Good luck to you!

Let us know how you fare. I think you're not alone in digging that leather quality, so I'm sure others would like to hear about any winners you find.

@fabio16, Ancnoc 24 is on my short list when I travel to Nova Scotia later this month. What is your overall opinion of it?

@Astroke its ok! I would not buy another bottle. Unless you like not too fruity bourbon cask matured scotch. So many pubs in Nova Sc. I'm sure you will find plenty of good whisky to taste, If you can stop drinking those India Pale Ales. Enjoy!
