Well mattberg, open whisky can be widely affected by oxidization. I find a half full bottle sometimes adversely reacts over time and becomes slightly "tainted". Though this is true, sometimes you may find the whisky benefits somewhat from the time left open. To answer the question of decanting, it comes down to personal preference, because the outcome may vary from person to person, whisky to whisky. Just a quick tip that if you are going to decant an expensive whisky, you may want to try filling the decanter with a cheapish whisky first and let it sit for a couple of weeks just to ensure that your new, expensive and ready to be decanted whisky does not become flavoured by the glass.

I've recently been leaving new bottles opened for an hour before pouring and also leaving a glass to stand for half an hour or so before sipping. I've also noticed the difference in taste between bottles half full that I have left out in fresh country air for a few months and bottles tasted in central London.
Another thing I've noticed is that bottles bought duty free in hot climates (perhaps left standing for months) tend to taste different to previous bottles tasted in UK retail outlets.
