Before Dramlette's birthday dinner and drams, and while the Redskins get mauled by the Broncos, a little Ancient Ancient Age 10 STAR, the one you can get outside of Kentucky...Bourbon Kool-Aid, I call it...sweet and light...this bottle is over-aired and over-the-hill, but 5% aged rum changes all that into something very pleasant and not far away from what it originally tasted. @paddockjudge, @dramlette will be "back at 'cha" apres diner et drams.

@Victor Just be glad you are having a wonderful time celebrating your better 3/4s birthday. I'm stuck out side with the grill with what looks like little chickens in near sub arctic winds with only two standard poodles and a weeee dram of Isle of Skye to keep me company. LOL Happy 29th Birthday @dramlette. :)

I don't know @Victor, Washington is looking pretty good right now up by 7 points. :-) Happy birthday to @dramlette!

While watching the game and waiting for the World Series to start, sipping a glass of the Heaven Hills Trybox Rye that I'm aging; trying to decide if it is ready to bottle yet. Getting close, but I think I will give it a little more time.

@Victor. As usual, you knew what you were talking about. At least they were in it until the last quarter.

@bwmccoy, yes, the Redskins are not quite there yet, but they have been doing better than at the beginning of the season. I didn't see the second half. Just as well. Tonight's dinner fare: Reservoir Wheated Whiskey, John J. Bowman Bourobn, and Virginia Highland Single Malt Whisky. The Virginia Highland Malt is sourced Scotch malt matured or finished (I am not sure which) in Virginia "Port" wine barrels. It tasted like Clynelish malt to me. That one was ok. The "port" muffled the nose, but still not bad. The Bowman was great bourbon. That Reservoir Wheated was a little on the 'spirity' sour side. I didn't care for that one much.

I really like this bourbon as well @Nozinan. If you ever come across it, I recommend Johnny Drum Private Stock. A very good bourbon at a very good price... Well here in Japan it's a good price, at the LCBO, who knows!?

Having a hearty dram of the Bowmore 12 yr...Has a bit more 'zing' to it than the 40% abv would suggest...Reminds me a lot of the HP 12 yr.

Finishing off the 200 cc bottle of lagavulin 16. An easy to drink smoker. Smells great, even after a year with gas. But the taste is a little thin. I'm looking forward to my 12 year yo cask strength when I get to it. I would love to taste laga 16 as a cask strengther

Tonight, started with Angel's Envy before dinner.

After dinner, had the last dram of Bunnahabhain 13 year (1997) Port finish-Murray McDavid bottling. I am really going to miss this one.

Finished the night with Ardbeg Ardbog.

Blind Tasting - Junior pours two glasses and I do my best to identify them - from approximately 120 expressions. Tonight the blind taste was especially interesting. The first had a huge rye nose, it reminded me of Masterson's straight rye, but then it was all too clear...Penny Packer Straight Bourbon. The second was obviously a Forty Creek expression; which one...Port Wood Reserve, unmistakable. Who guesses Penny Packer Bourbon?... that is scary, but à propos, after all it is Halloween.

A way to enjoy my batch 1 of Stagg Jr: 50/50 vatting with Alberta Premium 100% Rye Canadian whisky. This vatting effectively makes this a rye whisk(e)y.

You got me jonesin' for a smash of AP30.

Got the heel out of a bottle that was opened some time this year, I think the end of May.

Light fruit on the nose, ripe pears and some baking spices, brown sugar, cinnamon. The nose is much sweeter than the palate. Entry is extremely viscous, bitter oak and a hint of maple syrup followed by pepper on the mid-palate - the baking spices are faint with a hint of citrus pith before the pepper announces the exit. The finish is medium, but long for a Canadian, with some heat and a whisp of mint and cardomon. The flavours may have been slightly muted due to the fact that the bottle was nearly empty for a few months...I'm smacking my lips ...very dry finish, unless you have another sip. lol . It's not too rough on the exit/finish....I'll let you decide if it goes with a cigar.

You've got most of a review there, @paddockjudge. You might as well post it.

I am finding that this bottle of Alberta Premium, as with most rye whiskies, holds up well and even improves with air.
