Dropped by a close friend this evening and brought the following flight:
1) 20 Year Old Plantation Rum - nice sweet taste to start and not need of any additions as a very smooth finish ' 2) 90 20 Year Old Canadian Rye - perhaps the rum was still on the palate but this one did not have the same taste as a week ago. Came across as very weak
3) Balvenie 12 Year Old First Fill - a bot of a throw in to finish the bottle but had a very nice citrus taste w some water added.
4) Balcones Texas Single Malt - let it sit for 20 minutes but still came across very strong and harsh - much more palatable taste when water was added. Looking forward to trying again in a couple of weeks.
5) Laphroaig 18 - so the theme was from sweet to peat and obviously this was a heavy finish. Too heavy for the friends but for me it was a nice smoky conclusion to the evening,

BB&R Bunnahabhain 24 year old. Fantastic stuff. Grapey, nutty, and refined nose that translates directly to a complex palate. Soft for +50% ABV.

Jack Daniels Old No. 7, at an engagement party. That particular bottle tasted much better to me than Jack Old No. 7 usually does.

Alberta Premium 25 & 30 YO. I'm gonna miss these when they're gone. Hey Jonesz, nice addition to your cabinet with Nadurra 16 YO.

Some bourbons while I watch the commentary track to a movie my 10-year-old daughter Maggie loves, 1943's The Phantom Of The Opera, starring Claude Rains. Bulleit, Four Roses Small Batch, E.H. Taylor Single Barrel and Booker's 25th 10yrs 3mo Batch No. 2014-01 65.4%ABV.

@talexander, yes, I think that you are right about Jack. Whiskeys don't just go down hill. Sometimes they improve a lot. The Jack No. 7 I had last night I could be happy drinking. I hope that it stays that good now.

@paddockjudge Ya just wanted to get one before the 16yr old disappeared. It was a "new" addition to the MLCC shelves. We seem to get a lot of offerings just when the distillery discontinues them? Go figure

Was out Saturday night for a Whisky Fundraiser at the Diefenbunker (an old, decommissioned nuclear defense bunker). The line-up consisted of Old Pulteney 12yr, Longmorn 16yr, Caol Ila 12yr, Glenfarclas '105' 10yr, and Arran Port Cask Finish.

it's a week night and I'm finally done with Mackmyra The Swedish Whisky. I didn't like it, Now it is time to indulge myself. I think I will go with the surprising Jack Daniel's Signature...

Decided to do a blend of my two latest buys. Aberlour 12 NCF and Glengoyne 15. Half and half. Not bad. Probably wouldn't do it again. Have a great night, guys.

@YakLord
This is how out of it I've been...I didn't even know about the event at the bunker... Not that I'm in a position to go out drinking right now... But it sounds like a solid if not unique line-up.

had some Clynelish 18yr over the weekend. I really like that Chieftain's bottling. Some Bushmills in an irish coffee while making dinner, and put some Bulleit Bourbon in some gravy.

@JayRay I have two solutions for whiskies I don't like. First, vatting and mixing. Second, just gulp instead of sipping. OK, maybe I have only one solution...

Redbreast 15yo. @ 46%: Not my bottle, alas, but a generous pour by a generous neighbour and an absolutely brilliant example of just how good an Irish Whiskey can be! Purchased some time in 2006 and 2/3 full this is more than likely the highly regarded 2005 edn. which I thought I had previously tasted at a Whisky Bar in Hobart, Tasmania; maybe not as this seems very slightly darker (? memory). How could anyone have a Whiskey this good open for so long and not drink it all up? ...beats me!
@talexander has an excellent review of the Redbreast15yo. on our site with which I agree whole- heartedly, perhaps bumping the nose up to 24 - This is magic in a glass; I kid you not! (with 2 drops of distilled water, our latest quirk!)
Slainte!

@paddockjudge: Not easy to find Four Roses here in Australia, sadly! Nick's Vintage Direct Online a large Melbourne seller had a couple which are now all sold out incl. a Four Roses select Cask @ 50% for Au.$110.00. Check out 'Pappy' at Au.$5,500...not a misprint!!

@A'bunadhman - Outrageous! The ridiculous price of PVW is laughable. Tonight I had 4 Roses and Jefferson's Reserve; with great whisky like this I can suffer quietly without PVW. I would gladly send you a sample of FR 125th Anniversary Barrel Strength if you know anyone in Canada heading to Australia.

@A'bunadhman, get the Bulleit Bourbon Whiskey (700ml), it might actually be Four Roses distillate bottled by Bulleit. For $45 it is certainly worth it.

Talisker 57 North BOIOINGGG!! Its a cracker, very classic style, love it.

@PeatyZealot, I'm jealous. At this point in my dramming career, I think it's just Talisker 57N and Lagavulin 12 that I'm still super keen on trying but so far stymied by either local availability (Talisker) or price (Lagavulin). At least among modern mainstream releases.
