After an Arran 14 that is improving with air, I am with a dram of Redbreast 12. This one is so Irish and has so much honey, it's a classic!

Smoke. Where there's smoke there's fire. The Blue Jays are on fire. Particulate matter from the incindiary bombing of the Tigers, by the Blue Jays, is inescapable, even this far north. Tonight it is Lagavulin 16 and Bruichladdich Octomore 6.1 Scottish Barley, to help me acclimatize.

A flask comprised of "waste" whiskies produced from pouring off some sample bottles:

•Arran 12 CS (which was the first whisky I rinsed through the empty bottles to flush out remnants of previous contents)

•Connemara Cask Stength NAS (which filled one sample bottle, but only after I shook through a couple glugs to rinse out the Arran and then dumped into the flask)

•Springbank 1997 Madeira Cask Strength (same process as the Connemara, different sample bottle)

It's a pretty fiesty little mix.

For some reason I am in a rare "sherry" mood tonight. So I put a number of heavy hitting sherry cask strength monsters head-to-head:

Aberlour A’Bunda 60.2% Batch 45

Amrut Intermediate Sherry 57.1% No.2 Sept. 2010

Glendronach Cask Strength Batch 2 55.2%

Glenfarclas 105 60%

Kalavan Solist ex-Sherry 57.8%

I was amazed at how different sherry could be. My favorite nose of the night was the Glendronach which totally surprised me. Both the Kalavan and the Amrut were tied for second (nose only) while being radically different. The Glenfarclas 101 was playing in a different ball game. So different from the pack, so offensive, and so endearing. The A'bunadh was the big disappointment. It isn't bad, but it sure did not hold its own on the nose. It only came to life in the finish.

By the end the Amrut Intermediate Sherry emerged as my clear favorite. However, they were all very strong showings. I would buy any of them again . . . except for the A'bunadh batch 45. Thankfully, they keep cranking out the batches. Hope the next one that hits my store is better.

@Nock interesting comments...

I have personally found the Amrut (albeit batch 5) does not do well when matched against other Sherry monsters, unless of course it is the first dram.

The 45 seems to have good reviews, and I did like it. It is better than the 46 but not as good as the 44.

I am happy I have had the chance to try all the whiskies on your list for today (the solist at a spirit of Toronto festival). Usually I am finding myself wishing I could taste the stuff I read about.

Tonight, if I recover from my workout and feel like it, you almost inspired me to have some of the last of my Amrut IS, but as we had a memorial for my father today, if I do have something it will be Canadian club. I don't know if I can go as far as the standard CC, but maybe the 100% rye.

Ancient Ancient Age 10 Star, followed by Ardbeg Corryvreckan L 11 012.

The AAA10 Star, 45% abv, is a lovely very light bourbon from Buffalo Trace. L 11 012 is "Nock's worst Corryvreckan to date". Actually this L 11 012 Corryvreckan started out as something I considered barely drinkable--nothing at first but a huge wall of sour lemon citrus-- but after the bottle has been open for four years plus, the whisky has evolved enormously and is quite enjoyable now.

Aultmore 12yo. 46% abv. non-chill filtered, non coloured: A new expression in an OB. and quite splendid. "Don't look for peat, there isn't any" (Distillery speel). What a wonderful Malt driven 'old school' Whisky! I've looked long and hard at cask an can't find Sherry; I see splinters and perhaps European Virgin Oak (?) and wonderful malt, honeyed rich depth. In fact, this is just what those members are looking for when they request directions to pure Whisky, or it seems to me!...Delightful & spotless: I saw a Famous Samaroli Aultmore some years ago; it wasn't all that much better than this bottle!

Slainte!
