@MadSingleMalt

Tonight:

Bruichladdich Cuvee 16 Pomerol, a rich & fruity dram I got sample of from an online buddy in thanks for tipping him off to a stockpile of Black Arts 3.1s selling for the original price at a shop in New Jersey. I like it plenty, but I'm not jonesing for a bottle.

Bunnahabhain Toiteach, a pleasantly different (dry & dusty!) style of peat.

PC7, always killer.

Wiser's Legacy, I cry every time I pour from this discontinued bottle. The fill level should never go down because my tears continually replenish it.

@paddockjudge I feel your pain. It's unhealthy to continually revisit the pain that this is causing you.

As a physician I think the best thing I could do for you is to offer to take custody of the bottle, and the remaining ones you have in your collection, so that their continued presence doesn't cause you more pain.

Really, I'm thinking only of you, not at all of the only 2 bottles of Legacy I have in reserve...

@Nozinan, prey tell good doctor, what would thou dost with nineteen bottles of the amber elixir?

@paddockjudge It would be tough, but I would probably drink it over the next 40 years, and it would form part of my Legacy to the next generations.

It would be a difficult job, but you are a true friend and I would consider it less than a mild inconvenience if it were to help you... stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes

During the Oscars, I had a couple of martinis (with Bombay Sapphire and Dolin vermouth) and a couple of Manhattans (one with Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye and one with G&W 17yo Little Trinity, both with Dillon's vermouth, Angostura bitters and Kinsip Maple & Walnut bitters). Don't worry, this started at 5:30pm with the red carpet coverage and just finished now.

Celebrating my wife and I’s 13th wedding anniversary with a Glenmorangie 15 year Sauternes Wood Finish bottling that we picked up at the distillery in 2010; signed by Dr. Bill for us later that year.

@Victor, @RianC, @Hewie, @talexander - Thank you all for your congrats.

@Hewie - this particular bottling is one of the best Glenmorangie’s that I have ever tasted; rich, mellow and sweet. It’s special both for it’s quality and for the memories we have associated with it.

Tonight, I had a dram of Bruichladdich Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2008 Heavily Peated.

I don’t normally drink during the week, but I took my wife’s vehicle in for an oil change today, and it ended up costing $175. It also needs a brake job that will cost us $600. So I’m having a dram of Glenlivet 18, and I will likely have some Ardbeg 10 afterwards....

@OdysseusUnbound OY!

If I had the energy I'd have some Uigeadail to commensurate with you... My wife is taking the car in Friday...

Instead of a full dram of Ardbeg 10, I mixed it in even parts with the last bit of Glenlivet 18. The Ardbeg totally dominated the ‘livet. If I’m to repeat this experiment, it has to be at least 2:1 Glenlivet 18:Ardbeg 10. I’m ending the night with a generous pour of Jameson Black Barrel and I have to say I’m very impressed. Honestly, it’s at least as good as the Glenlivet 18 and less than a third of the price (these days). Clearly some Sherry influence on the nose, rich Pot Still flavours on the palate and a crisp, refreshing citrus and green apple finish. Thanks to @Victor for recommending this one.

Bad day today. Had a local beer with some crispy duck pancakes for dinner, which helped me see colours again, and am now sipping a Jimador Reposado tequila.

It's very decent stuff (thanks again @Victor ); zingy, light, some subtle vanilla and oak and a herbal aloe vera type note - having no frame of reference for agave that seems the closet thing I can think of. Nicely sweet and sour drying finish.

I can imagine some of the aged tequilas having lots to offer.

Yesterday I paid a visit to my bottle of Macallan 2nd Ed. . I didn't mind myself, but it has definitely some sulfur. In fact, since the sulfur is increasing, I am not sure for how long I will be able to ignore it . For those sensitive to it, you have been warned.

A dram from my personal Port Charlotte mutt bottle, comprised of Scottish Barley, Islay Barley, An Turas Mor, and PC7. Good stuff.

It's a small bottle, and I need to empty it so I can reuse it for saving off a sample of the PC7 before it disappears from my life forever.

@Victor If it does, you’d never know it. You’d never know if it got “young” either. Like many women I’ve known, 57N doesn’t want to tell you its age. wink I hope to grab a bottle of it the next time I’m in the States. It really it wonderful stuff.

@OdysseusUnbound, when you are in the States? I get mine in Canada! 57 North isn't sold in the States. The only ways you get 57 N in the US are: 1) pre-arranged shipment from the UK or Europe to the US which you then pick up in person, or 2) buy 57 N at the automobile Duty Free on the Canadian side of the border coming into the US, and then bringing it back into Canada when you return. Problem there, besides travel inconvenience, is that 57 N is probably available at the auto Duty Free stores only at certain limited times of the year. 57 N might well be in Ontario right across from Buffalo right now, if it hasn't sold out yet. I bought it in two different years there in about February or March.

@Victor speaks truth.The only two bottles of Talisker 57 North that I've ever seen in the flesh here in Wisconsin arrived at my door thanks to an order I placed from a European whisky site a couple years ago.

Last night:

A gin & tonic made with Bruichladdich's "Botanist" gin. A nice change of pace, but I continue to expect my gin consumption to be about one bottle every two years, max.

After that, I set a theme:

  • A dram from my all-Campbeltown solera bottle.

  • A dram from my all-Port Charlotte solera bottle.

  • A dram from my all-Lagavulin solera bottle.

Had a lovely evening last night with another couple who I've been introducing to the world of single malts. We've been trying something different each time along with some great grazing food. Last night it was Aberlour 12, Ledaig 12, Caol Ila 12, and a NZ whisky "Larnach Castle". I had trouble finding any info on this last one. Larnach Castle is a mock Castle (a folly) which is now a tourist attraction. I believe the whisky must have been produced by the now defunct Willwbank Distillery in Dunedin, NZ. Unfortunately, it was the biggest disappointment on the night. Thin, grassy, a wee bit of paint thinner, and surprisingly very little oak. Bottled at 40% it's most likely just for the tourists too.
