Bruichladdich Octomore Orpheus - WOW! Amazing what the influence of the Bordeaux cask does to this whisky. It lightly softens and sweetens and dare I say, improves, an already great dram.

I started the afternoon with a Wiser's Legacy to celebrate my acceptance of a new job, and then onto an Ardbeg 10 year old with homemade hamburgers for dinner.

Also as a side note, I recently found a 1980's bottling of Seagram's V.O. in my girlfriend's grandmother's basement that she was going to throw out. I of course happily obliged getting rid of it for her. The bottle has special significance for me because I grew up around the original Seagram's distillery, which is now a consortium of lofts, and it's very interesting to have a bottle of whisky that was actually made in that distillery.

Had some Wisers Legacy for Canada Day and some Buffalo Trace for the 4th. I hope all our American friends had a great day. We Canadians don't always show it, but we do appreciate and respect our neighbours to the south. We're all in this together. A toast to the USA.

Yeah the Ymazaki range is pretty good, I think my favourite is probably the 17. Why not go all out Japanese and try it misowari?! Could well be different if you haven't tried it before and it is very refreshing.

Wiser's Legacy. I am delighted to see it now in the Connosr Top 50 most popular. It is very deserving. A word to the wise, though, my bottle is now showing deterioration after 14 months open. The nose is still good. Getting sour on the palate. Pity. Better to drink a bottle in 8-10 months.

A lot. My brother and sister in law just brought me my birthday present which was a 50inch Flat Screen HDTV screen with online and 3D capabilities. In honor of that I cracked open the Stranahans Colorado Single Malt, and then lots of other bottles. We're now 6 bottles in :D

@Wodha "My first taste of Edradour made me want to spit. That was a couple of years ago. Now I rather enjoy it. Try it again later when you're in a different stage of the journey. You might like it."

Thought i would never see the day that your message would be proved right, but tried Edradour 1997 / 13 Year Old / Cask #559 70cl / 57.5% and really enjoyed it. Big bit of humble pie for me and lessons learned A) Never give up on a distillery B) Never trust minatures.

What is the consensus on miniatures? Do you get the same quality, the same experience as with full size bottles? It is often a way to try a whisky without having to commit to the full bottle purchase. I have several miniatures of HP 30. I have only tried one, and I must say I was expecting more. Could have just been one of those days when the taste buds are not quite up to the task, but I was somewhat underwhelmed. I would probably never spring the $500 for a full bottle so I have to judge it on the mini.

Victor replied

@BlueNote, I have had good miniatures and I have had bad miniatures. On balance I do not trust that they will be quite the equal to the full size bottles.

@YakLord IMHO the Scapa 16 yr is a lovely dram for those hot summer nights...It's not overly complex, gentle on the nose, palate is honey/vanilla with a tad bit of malt, and spice...A very easy dram for beginners, or as I said a perfect dram for summer...Many will look past it because there's not alot of complexity, and for $75 - it's not a cheap dram either (picked up 2 for $64 each w/shipping - found thru winesearcher.com).

@Victor. I suspected as much. I'm going to crack another HP30 when I'm out on my boat this weekend. Of course just about anything tastes good when you are sitting in a nice anchorage watching the sun go down. I'll report back.

@FMichael. Glad to hear you got a good one and got turned onto an excellent dram.

@Victor
Victor replied

@BlueNote, don't forget that those HP whiskies often need some time to oxidise to open up. I would try your HP30 right away, then maybe a sip at a 20 minute interval and 10 minute intervals after that. I reviewed a 50 ml bottle of HP18 that was good and got a good review, but fresh out of the mini it was nowhere near the full equal of the whisky that I had had at bars, and from our own 750 ml bottle later at an interval of 3-4 months after the bottle was opened. I would say our HP18 bottle was at its very best 4-6 months after the bottle was opened. I noticed a very unfortunate detriouration after 8-9 months of the bottle open.

Big highball glass with a 2.25" ice ball and Templeton Rye. This is my favorite reaction to any summer day over 70 degrees F. I know, I am a heat wimp. This is why I ended up staying in Seattle since 1993. Time to refill!
