If it's decent, I'll toss it into my 'Frankenbottle.'
If it's downright bad, that's usually when I get mixing. I'll often try to find or think up a cocktail that would work best with the whisky's flavour profile. If that doesn't work, there's always coke.

@PeterG7, unfortunately that's sometimes easier said than done. I've given it several tastings over at least a 6 month period and I just can't do it.

@hunggar @Nozinan, guess that's something I need to consider. Perhaps I can start with blending and see if I can come up with something that is more enjoyable...and if all else fails you're right, there's always coke!

@broadwayblue you can always use them in recipes to add flavour. There is however one thing you can do for your friends here at connosr. List them! No point in all of us suffering. :)

@broadwayblue Great discussion point. I will use bad bottles for blending with soda, or mixing in sauces for grilling. I have even just dumped them down the drain if I can not get them to go down as a mixer. I will more likely use a bad single malt up in this matter, whereas blends will just get dumped do to not much being wasted price wise. :)

At the Spirit of Toronto whisky gala in May 2013, I sat in on a tasting of Hiram Walker & Sons " Lot No. 40 Single Copper Pot Still Canadian Whisky" hosted by Charles Maclean and Ralfy.
During the session, Ralfy commented on how lucky we were here in Canada because we have such great Canadian whiskies... and maple syrup!
Ralfy continued that no whisky should be tossed - if you do happen to get an off bottle, just add a teaspoon or two of maple syrup, let it mellow, and presto! better tasting whisky!
Luckily, I have not yet had a bottle of whisky that was off, so I have not had to try Ralfy's suggestion...

@tfahey1298 - that is so cool with the maple syrup. Not that Gibson's whisky needs any maple syrup (Gibson’s Finest 100th Grey Cup Limited Edition Whisky) - if it is good enough for Brian Kinsman, Malt Master at Scotland’s Glenfiddich, Grant, and Balvenie distilleries (he created the 100th anniversary limited release), then adding a few drops of maple syrup to already great whisky is okay with me...why wait for a dud?

@McTeague Ha - exactly - serve them to non-whisky-loving guests. Or experiment with cocktails, who knows, you might find one that works best in a Rob Roy or a Manhattan.

@talexander The cocktail idea is a great one. I had one the other day with Macallan 12. Not a favorite of mine straight, but the cocktail was aces. It was a "Sin Cyn":
•1 oz The Macallan 12 •1 oz Cynar •1 oz Carpano Antica Formula Vermouth Garnish: Orange twist Glass: Rocks

@McTeague Interesting! I should try that. I have an open bottle of Macallan 12 - I actually quite like it neat or with a splash of water, but regardless I would try this cocktail. I'm not afraid to make cocktails out of premium whiskies. I made a Rusty Nail once out of Black Bull 40yo and Dunkeld Atholl Brose. Not only was it the best Rusty Nail I've ever had, it was the best Rusty Nail ANYONE'S ever had on the planet.

To answer your initial question... Leave them at a friends house. That's what I do.

While we are obviously hoping to fully enjoy every bottle we throw down our hard earned cash for, the reality is not all will meet our expectations. I've got a couple such malts in my cabinet that I just can't get behind. What do you do with these bottles?
