Something you probably haven't tried...

I'm looking for inspiration for which bottle to buy next. I've been a little guilty recently of buying whiskies I've already tried and which I know are good.

I'm sure we've all come across bottles that are a little off the beaten track that are surprisingly good, so I thought I'd start a "Something you probably haven't tried but really should" thread. Please tell us what and why.

I'll kick things off with Tormore 12 Year old. Why? Its a pleasant enough Speyside - not too sweet with a hint of spice - but what makes it worth looking at are:

1) the price (I've seen it as low as £17 but usually £22) 2) the mouth feel - its really thick and oily - very good at that price. This would be a good one to give a beginner to teach them about mouth feel.

Ardmore Traditional Cask is one of my personal favorites. IMO, there is nothing like it. It's a moderately bacon-smoky Speyside, has a lovely almond/walnut/cinnamon flavor, and is gutsy at 46 ABV. You may also want to peruse or contribute to the discussion on "Unique Whiskies".

Anything by Glencadam (or at least something in the last 15 years - I think they might have changed their style a bit before that). I found them through an SMWS bottling (Rubber Truncheons and Bargepoles, iirc?) and they do a lovely toffeed dram with a streak of rubber running through the middle. I've got their 15 year old in my cupboard (along with the end of the SMWS bottle waiting for a special occasion) and I suspect I'll replace it with the same when it's done.

ISTR being impressed by the Royal Lochnagar, but thinking I'd probably never have tried it due to a) the name, and b) the labelling. Yes, I am that fickle. (To defend, you can actually often judge an album by its cover, and dogs CAN look up.)

Might have to try it again some time...
