Distribution of ratings for this:
- Brand: Stalk & Barrel
- ABV: 43%
Nose: pine, vanilla ice cream, dark chocolate. Seems like an odd combo, but works well. Chocolate-covered cherries. Youthful, complex, and intriguing.
Taste: full-bodied and rich with immediate impact on the palate. The chocolate note turns white now. Lots of spicy/prickly rye notes. Oak takes a back seat but provides some grip on the mouth.
Finish: Quite drying and intense.
Balance: Stalk & Barrel has officially arrived with this blend. As a moderately-priced premium Canadian whisky it's a five-star performer in my book. Having tasted Stalk & Barrel's rye, malt, and corn whiskies separately, I can affirm that this is an accurate representation of their house style, neither playing by the rules nor veering wildly off-course. In spite of all the sweet notes (chocolate, vanilla, ice cream), it doesn't come off as overly sweet at all and manages to be both challenging and extremely drinkable. In twelve years this could be a serious whisky indeed.
Glad this got reviewed, this finally came in to the SAQ recently and I was curious if it was worth trying, sounds like it might be worth a purchase. I heard good things about their Canada 150 blend which was bottled at 50% ABV, there seems to be quite a bit of that still around.
