You listed Nikka 12, do you mean Taketsuru, Yoichi, Miyagikyou? In any case I would suggest bringing a Japanese expression. Always nice to throw that into the mix ; )

Gotta thank you for the advice. The Japanese whisky - Taketsuru 12 - was one of my favorites of the weekend. It's odd in that it seemed to have the nose of a speyside...or a Highland...and yet on the palate it had smoke that you find in Islay. I really like it.

On the flipside, the turkey's of the weekend were the Balvenie Signature 12 and worse still - The Johnnie Walker Red that one of my friends brought up for comparing against the JW Blue. The Red smelled of rotten apples. It didn't taste quite as bad as it smelled but I would pass on it in the future. I liked the Blue.

@mrgargus, really happy you liked the Taketsuru 12! I would highly recommend any of the older expressions. Taketsuru really improves with age in my opinion.
As for your comment regarding the nose and the palate, that is definitely a common trait among Japanese whiskies. The nose can often suggest something quite different than the flavor profile. Something I really quite enjoy actually!

So a friend and I are heading to another friends this weekend. He's about 3 hours away. This would be our first attempt at a 'Tasting'. The host looks to be offering up a Balvenie Signature 12, a MacAllan 12 (Sherry Oak Casks) and A Glenfiddich Special Reserve. The other friend is bringing up a Johnny Walker Blue label, Laphroaig Quarter Cask, Connemara Cask Strength and Alberta Premium Dark Horse. There is another friend that may contribute a few samples as well. Which then leaves myself. Looking on the shelves, I've decided to bring up the Booker's Bourbon, Connemara Turf Mor and 2 of the following: the Glenmorangie Nector D'or, Lagavulin Distillers Edition 1996, Bruichladdich 18 year old finished in Willie Opitz casks, Highland Park 15, Nikka 12 Or Eagle Rare Bourbon. I've also got a Talisker 57 North but not sure I want to open that up yet. So which two would you guys pick from the list?
For anyone ambitious who wants to look at my cabinet on the profile, if you see something you think others might enjoy, let me know.
Thanks.
