The Whistler 5 Year Old Double Oaked

The Boann Distillery is a new Irish one, built in 2017. They only started distilling in 2019, so what they are putting out today is so-called sourced whiskey. At first I will try this 5 years old Double Oaked, which is put on the market under the name The Whistler. It matured, as the name suggests, on both bourbon and oloroso sherry casks.

Somewhat sweet and sickly on the nose, on caramel, overripe fruit, mildly rotting oranges (not an off-note, by the way), molded wood and roasted nuts. This is quite OK.

On the palate, however, things go sideways. The fruit quickly has to make place for oak and grain and becomes rather flat. The mouthfeel is OK, but the taste is lacking. Very alcoholic for a whiskey that is bottled at the minimum. What a shame.

The finish becomes sharp and bitter and is not pleasant at all.

Well, there is still some work to be done here. On the other hand, it's only 30 EUR of course. Thank you for the sample, Johan.
