@SquidgyAsh I don't know how I'll get to your place in the midst of the zombie-pocalypse, but, I'll be there.
The more I leave my PE 30yo, the more it is becoming an "untouchable". Sadly. Maybe we should put a time limit on it, and whenever that time is (years from now) crack both bottles at once for a side-by-side comparison? =D

@systemdown Hahaha :D Sounds like a plan! I honestly figure that when they stop releasing the whiskies and everyone is running around praying to find a bottle, and the prices have shot even further through the roof, I think that's the right time to crack these bad boys open, just sit back and savor them:D
I like your thinking! Out will come all the big bad boys!

Those bottles are all for my wife and me to drink. If there is an apocalypse or any other dire condition, the current collection might only last 5 years, instead of 30. That would then be medicinal whisky, in the most therapeutic form. There is a good reason that quality liquor is one of the best barter goods in time of social disintegration.
Those bottles that are not yet opened merely await the proper circumstances.

@SquidgyAsh I like your plan, save the really good stuff until the undead (zombies) come knocking on the door. I have one particular whisky that I won't open for a long time. I came across a Glen Flagler 73 about 5 years ago. I bought it more for it's historical value. Not many of them around anymore.

@PeterG7 You're welcome to join us during the zombie apocalypse! We could make it a Connosr get together and it'll be just like the Walking Dead. But instead we'll hold up in the most secure, whisky liquor store that we can find, and just wait out judgement day!

i, too, am in it more for the drinking than the collecting, though i do have a few things stashed for possible sale later on, and would consider buying other things for the same purpose. right now, im considering buying a couple glengoyne 17's, as ive seen it in a few stores for ~80 still, but 120+ in others and online. ive also got a stash of a couple chivas century of malts minis and ~90 knockando 1975/1989 minis. i definitely plan on drinking some of the knockando's though.
other than that, everything else i have is open, but theres a few that are only for special occasions, such as a regular size bottle of the chivas century of malts, glenkinchie 10 and longmorn 15. everything else is regularly available stuff thats open-season.

I fully expect I'll be leaving a few of my currently unopened bottles to my kids (if they are interested) or to friends (if the kids are not), because I would find it hard to open and effectively destroy a piece of history. Would that I could taste everything Ralfy and his peers could in a dram.
I've only been doing this less than 3 years (reading a lot, tasting less). Maybe in 20 years I'll be ready, and I can share some of these gems with my kids and some friends. If I still have friends. Though if I announce I'm opening an old 25 yo Macallan bottled in the 90s, I'll suddenly have lots of friends I'm sure...

I love drinking and sharing whisk(e)y so I really don't have any that are untouchable. I do however hold some bottles back for my personal enjoyment. I usually pull one or two out on my birthday each year along with a 70's vintage Habano to pair with my dram.

@Bourbondork
Fascinating. I've never heard of pairing hot peppers with Whisky....

The only untouchable whisky I have is a Airigh nam beist. I know it's going to be a great whisky, but when it's gone I doubt if i'll ever find another one.

@SquidgyAsh - Australia would be way too hard to get to in the event of a zombie apocalypse, but I like your idea.
Right now the "untouchables" in my cabinet are the Highland Park 25, which I plan to open at Christmas / New Year (so in about 3 months...), plus a small, but changing selection of out of production or LCBO "discontinued" bottlings that I've set aside to be consumed at my wake/funeral (in about 55 to 60 years, I hope...although who knows what sort of condition they'll be in).
This second set presently consists of the following: Arran Machrie Moor 2nd Edition, Compass Box Peat Monster, Compass Box Spice Tree, Johnnie Walker Green Label, and The Tweeddale Blend 3rd Edition (12yr; 2013).
