@SquidgyAsh, I haven't been out-and-out drunk since my brother's wedding in 2006, but I have noticed a difference in how "buzzy" (or "pleasantly tittly," as the Scots might say) I feel depending on what I'm drinking. I seldom have more than two or three drams of whisky a few times per week, and I drink it slowly enough that I never get past the "comfortable" point.
I know what you mean about beer. My beer drinking these days is mostly limited to parties and gatherings with friends -- occasions that don't lend themselves to thoughtful whisky nosing and sipping, in other words -- and about four is my limit before I know I should stop (unlike the old days when I could handle a couple of pitchers on my own!). Maybe it's because I drink it faster. I just know that four beers gets me more "sloshy" than four whiskies.
If I drank whisky at the same rate that I drink beer, however, I suspect the outcome would be about the same. But I don't intend to start chugging down drams of the good stuff to find out!

@WhiskyBee I like to take 12 or so whiskies over a few hours, but amusing enough is most of my beers start at 9% and move higher and higher and I'll take them at the same rate, maybe a beer at an hour and a half, but I still notice that I start getting drunk (no other term as much as I try to avoid this) hence I tend to leave it to only 2 beers a night even though it's for work purposes. I mean I can see if I was just chugging beers then yah I'll be drunk just as quick as if I was shooting whisky, but since I don't it's been something that's had me puzzled :D
I feel you though about being able to drink so much in the past though. I remember drinking 2 bottles of vodka when I was 21 and coming to two days later. One reason I limit the alcohol intake anymore...

My theory is that usally with beer the total liquid consumed is much higher then with scotch (assuming you drink it neat ) so the kidney have a harder time processing it so it stays in the body longer

1.4 liter vodka in one night? You should have challenged the Russians in those days ;)
By the way your Aussie beer seems to be really strong. 9% upwards? The good old german beer has approx. 5%. If you drink 4 beer with 10%, thats 200ml pure alcohol. But I know what you mearn, sometimes I can even 1 beer makes me a little dizzy. But I also never drank 12 whiskys in one session, so I might be the false counterpart for this discussion.

@Wills Thanks my friend, problem is I find the 5% boring so I tend to stick with Imperial Stouts and Imperial Russians. Which tend to be at around 9% ABV, but I find even lower percentage abv's such as 5-6% are enough to get me feeling tipsy and feeling like I dont want any more

beers, ill drink 10 pints easy and be walking home just fine. whisky fine again, not even a waver of drunkenness, although its incredibly hard for me to get drunk on whisky as it takes me 2 hours to drink a dram on average (time = more appreciation). however give me anything grape based and i'm hammered after only 1 or 2. cider i'm allergic to, makes me look like i'm having a stroke then i start choking, so realy can't say that i realy could comment on that one.

This might sound REALLY stupid and I'm sorry if it does, but it's something that I've REALLY noticed since I've started running a beer store.
Now you might ask what I'm talking about and here it is....Beer gets me drunk.
Massive revelation eh?
But this is what I mean I can have up to something like 12 different whiskies in a four hour period with water and food and I'll still be sober. These whiskies can be up to almost 70% ABV.
I can have 3 or 4 beers in the same four hour period and they'll be sitting at 7-12% ABV and I'll start to get drunk. This is with food and water.
Does anyone else have this event occur with any specific types of alcohol? I also know Cognac, light rum and gin can make me violently ill.
I'm just sort of curious as to whether I'm just weird on this or whether I'm weird period. Another guy I work with who's a bourbon lover says the exact same thing between beer and whisky affects him.
