What's with all the advertisers?

Something I've noticed for a while and I'm hoping I am not offending anyone and if I am please forgive me, but has anyone else noticed that so many people that join A) Have NOTHING about whisky in their profile, but instead talk about their auto parts, vacation houses, gas deals, etc in their profile? Is this just me? Do these folks ever participate?

Again if it's just me or if I've offended anyone please forgive me. I don't intend to, but it's something that's been puzzling me for a while.

Thx Ash. I feel the same. I highly doubt, those are reading anything concerning whisky here. Maybe these are just bots... They often have interesting pics to get your attention and then an url. I would delete them instantly, but I guess the admins don't have so much time. I started to ignore them, but I don't like this too.

@Wills true enough alot of new users indeed. I rarely click them unless they add any bottles to their cabinet tough... then I might look them up if I can find anything interesting for my own collection one day in the future. So I guess thats why I never reflected over it.

Well I searched to give you an example and it was quite difficult to find some. I guess it is not that common, but I remember an evening where lots of "bots" joined.

I try to check the newsfeed as much as I can, especially since I don't have the time to spend on Connosr like I used to. Every so often you seem a name or a picture on the members joined that makes you go they could be cool. So when I click on them it's so often an advertiser. At first I just thought it was me and maybe these peoples were with the companies and just loved whisky, but now I'm thinking it must be bots? Don't know, but like I said I didn't want to to offend anyone.

We do have filters in place to catch as many of these accounts as possible but some still slip through the net. We also manually approve all accounts and if any look 'suspect' they get suspended or removed.

No doubt some still get through - for which we can only apologise - we should probably add function which would allow established community members to flag new spam accounts.

Thanks for the feedback!
