A relatively local store (Pine Orchard Wine and Liquor in MD) had "Dollar Days"(one dollar over cost).. The owner wears a kilt and is Korean. She's a hoot, but she knows her wine and also a lot about Scotch. Her store's Dollar Days are over now, but if you live in the MD/DC area, you can get a big discount on any bottle not on sale when Dollar Days are over...examples are Ardbeg 10 and Tali 10 for 40$. Laga 16 for 60. 'farclas 105 for 60. Corry for around 70, and the Uideadail fo evenr less. The Tali DE was around 60$.

Even normally, the prices are only a few dollars over "Dollar Days" any day of the week. The place has the feel of a good used book store: packed to the rafters with occasional rarities and IB's.

My haul::

Port Charotte 10 Bowmore 15--I like this batch Ardbeg 10 Ardbeg An Oa ArbbegUigeadail (2) Ardbeg Corryvrecken Laphrhoaig Cairdeas Tiple Wood (2) Talisker GOT Talisker 10 Talisker DE Hazelburn 13 Springbank 10 Lagavulin 16 (2) Lagavulin 16 DE Lagavulin 9 GOT ( I like it better than the 8, I think) Catoctin Creek Barrel Select Rye Finlaggan.Reserve Longrow Peated (from a different store) Caol Ila 17 CS Laphroaig Cairdeas Triple Wood (2) Springbank 10 Ledaig 10

Why no sherry monsters? I love sherried whisky but didn't see anything special at a good price ('cept for the 105 for 60$). .I would like to balance the peat with some sherried whisky, so I'll get something in that direction when I can. Maybe I will start a discussion topic to ask for recommendations beyond the usual suspects.

Do folks like the Mortlach 12 Wee Witchie? It's been calling my name, but I have not understood what "meaty" could mean as a whisky descriptor.

Why so many purchases? I'm not flush--far from it-- but received the first half of my summer teaching pay and some faculty development money, plus I happened to unknowingly walk into Dollar Days at Pine Orchard Liquors in MD. The lines were insane. I'll rectify the sherry shortage when I next visit there or some place that won't require an hour long ride (roundtrip).

Just bought this beauty recently, mainly because it was 30% off, but also because it is absolutely fabulous.

A'bunadh 63. I couldn't have a cabinet without a good sherried whisky. Talisker 10: they dropped the price by 10$ and I know this batch by now. I do have to say that the 9 year GOT edition has more pepper and more pep--but they don't have it in my area any more.The ten is still richer.

I've had a depressed time since the double broken leg. I buy lots of whisky but seldom have the impulse to crack a bottle. If any one wants a dram with-- and on-- me and lives in the DC/MD area, write to me.

This was a great weekend: Nick Cave's Conversations and songs (just the piano) was heart breaking and inspiring,He lost his son a couple of years ago after the teenager jumped off a cliff. Nick beats the pants off of many philosophy professors.He can deal with the most harrowing experiences and keep his humor, elegance, and composure. What I liked the best was that he was more interesting in the questions than his own answers.Intense. Also--this was very romantic if that is your bag or date. GO if possible!

A yearly Asian Night Market in Baltimore last night was great, except for a fall flat on on my back (my leg is still not up to par). The owner of Ida B's gave me a big portion of crawfish to take home. Sometimes people ain't so bad.

I learn so much from many of you. Thank you for the effort you put in

Depression is a bitch, but I'm slowly coming back. I guess that's why I bought those bottles. I'll crack them open soon with friends, and my wife likes some of them.She likes to have a dram after doing my wound care.She has a strong stomach.

Can't wait for a check in the mail so that I can buy some more whisky.

@Hewie If you happen to come to the US from NZ,you can help me taste them :). I saw that you like Kilkerran and Springbank. Springbank has become a really delicious and complex sip for me. I'm intrigued by both the Kilkerran 8 and 12. I enjoyed them botn when I had them, though they are not cheap here;. I have the sense that they are like Springbanks with a bit less sherry.. I think I'll go for the Killkeran 12 when the opportunity presents itself---in the next week or so.The 8 is great, but I'm becoming less focused on abv, in spite of the quality so many CS releases.

@Jonathan - Some great buys there! Hang in strong and take a day at a time - the hardest thing about depression is that those that care can get hurt yet can't do anything to help, it becomes a viscious circle. Sounds like you've got a good woman there though! And that hauls gotta put a big smile on your face stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye

I just bought a Laphroaig Cairdeas Triple Wood Cask Strength. Why? I’m not sure if the LCBO will actually get this one in, so when a friend was in Alberta and texted me a picture of it, I had to pull the trigger.

Four Roses Single Barrel. It was a gift rather than a purchase from my dear old Mum. She's a crafty one though as she knows I'll be enjoying more than a few drams with her when she visits next week ha grin

One I've wanted for years but never got round to getting a bottle. Looking forward to it as I really enjoyed the Small batch and it seems to always gets rave reviews, which is impressive for a single barrel line.

I just bought a Blanton’s Original and Wild Turkey 101. Why?

As some people here know, my father-in-law is not well these days. He’s in palliative care and my mother-in-law is spending most of her days and nights at the hospital. My wife and I are doing what we can to help, which includes doing her groceries. I went in to our local LCBO to pick up a bottle of gin for my m-i-l, and I happened to notice a few bottles of Blanton’s Original. I liked the Gold well enough, so I thought I’d take a chance on this one.

I bought the WT 101 because I’ve been keeping a bottle of single malt and a bottle of bourbon at my in-laws’ place for the last 2 years or so, and I was out of bourbon there. It’s more convenient than dragging bottles back and forth. I’ve yet to find a bourbon I like better for $40 or less than WT 101.

So much for a moratorium on purchases.

@OdysseusUnbound Sorry to hear about your father in law.

If you want a Bourbon under $40 that is extraordinary, OGD114 - if I haven't given you a sample yet I have been negligent...

@Nozinan I reviewed OGD 114 from a sample you gave me. And my mother picked one up for me in Florida last winter. She actually ended up buying two of them, since she drank the first one she bought for me.

@OdysseusUnbound there is much to like in a woman who will go through a bottle of Old Grand-Dad 114.

@OdysseusUnbound

@Victor And it’s not like she had help from my father. He drinks light beer. And maybe one Crown Royal on the rocks per year....and I have to finish it for him, or he ends up adding Pepsi to it. My mother on the other hand has enjoyed Glenfarclas 105, Redbreast 12 Cask Strength, and Stagg Jr among others. She prefers bourbon and Irish Whiskey, but she's not averse to scotch, as long as it’s not too heavily peated.

@Nozinan A few more of the goodies I picked on the recent KWM sale. The Signatory Glen Rothes is particularly outstanding. The Kilchoman STR, after some initial doubts, is settling in nicely now and well up to their high standards. Haven’t cracked the OP 18 yet, but tasted it at the distillery last year and was mightily impressed. Can’t wait to do a H to H with the late 17.

Incidentally @Nozinan and the rest of you Ontarians, Craft Cellars in Calgary has a 15% off sale on until the 29th. Three of us put a six bottle order together, which is the best deal for shipping. Worked out to $7.80/bottle for shipping via Canada Post and we paid another $15 for insurance. That’s to BC, I don’t know if shipping would be more to Ontario. The Arran 18 worked out to $117.50 including GST and shipping and insurance. They have a pretty good selection (not as good as KWM), but very decent, and they have regular sales. We’ll be dealing with them again.

@BlueNote Did they (Craft Cellars) charge you Alberta tax or BC tax? I was going to order some bottles a while back and they were going to charge me 13% tax. I doubt they were going to send that extra 8% to Doug Ford so I cancelled my order and will stick with ZYN.

I just received a Glenfiddich 15 Solera as a “gift” from my wife’s grandfather. His brother gets him a bottle of scotch every time he visits, but my wife’s grandfather doesn’t like having “too much” whisky on hand. I’m glad to help out. I know many aren’t fans, but I have a soft spot for ‘fiddich.

@TracerBullet perhaps we were both in the same line? They had a Dollar Days preview for folks on the email list. I had no idea. I just drove up and saw the line. The storeowner and her son let me through. Pine Orchards is really a great example of a family owned business, isn't it? The taste in scotch selection is just great: I've seen Amrut IS for 110 (or so), Black Arts, and several Octomores. In the very back aisle they have some IB's that look interesting, but I I don't want to research too much on my phone when others are shopping too. Any tips about their IB's?

IBs at cask strength seem to be selling well at local stores in Baltimore.In terms of peat, we usually see Caol Ila or Ardmore, rather than Lagavulin or Ardbeg, in those bottles. Still...CS Ardmore could be great. I've seen that Total Wine has this IB Battle Hill range, but I'm distrustful of the place and those IBs. The folks in Total Wine always want to sell me Grangestone. Feels more like a pyramid scheme or cult than a proper liquor store.

The next bottle I will buy is the Benriach Curiositas, then probably Springbank CS if my connection comes through. Then, both Kilkerrans (8 and 12) if I can afford to buy them and they are still on the shelf :)

Postman brought these 2 today. Latest Springbank 12 CS. Because, well it's my favourite Springbank and I buy every release.

Then the 2019 release of their 18 year old. I didn't give the last 18 an amazing review on here. But, I had that bottle open for the best part of a year and just recently finished it. It got better and better with time. I don't think I've ever known a bottle change as much as that over time. If I'd reviewed it in the last month or so it would have got a point or two more. Very complex.
