@paddockjudge Picked up a bottle of the Old Ezra 7 BS as well, very nice. Wish it was the same $40 like it is in the US. Must be Heaven Hill, the LCBO charges us Heaven Hill prices for Luxco.

Word for many years has been that the Ezra Brooks line was distilled at Heaven Hill. Do not forget that Luxco now has its own producing distillery. This new product is still sourced bourbon, but in a few years that will change.

I believe that I am still the only one on Connosr to have reviewed an Ezra Brooks product, having reviewed Ezra Brooks 90 proof, Old Ezra 7 yo 101, and Ezra B 12 yo Single Barrel.

I hold a special place for Ezra Brooks, because that was my father's bourbon.

This new barrel strength one sounds great. I love the bottle of Old Ezra 7 yo 101 I have too. It got better and better with time. And 90 proof standard Ezra Brooks has always in the USA been a very solid enjoyable bourbon for very little money. $ 14.16 including the tax still buys a 750 ml bottle of it where I live. This month on sale $ 25.06 will buy you 1.75 Litres of it. Do I still like it with the dozens of bottles of high end bourbon I have on hand? Yes, I am always happy to drink Ezra Brooks.

Just got myself a Kilkerran 8yrs cask strength (57.1%) sherry matured. One came into my local shop in London, and they were kind enough to take hold of it for me. Why I bought it? Cause I had the chance to taste it with the Kilkerran boys at the London whisky show back in September and made a note not to miss it once it came out :)

@boatracer I think it's a great buy! I have tried it a couple of times now and I think it's a winner.

@paddockjudge @Victor looks like theOld Ezra barrel proof may no longer be available at the LCBO.

FOMO has become RORO - Reality of Missing out.

Doh!

@RikS is this particular batch good or are they all of a similar quality? I have an unopened bottle of Kilkerran 8 (I think its the last release).

that's right @Nozinan, there is no more Old Ezra 7 YO Barrel Strength at LCBO retail stores. Anyone looking to build a stock pile has missed the opportunity. Contrary to recent reports, there is none left for retail trade...and I didn't buy a backup on my way home this evening.

.@Nozinan, if you go to the C_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ s store, I would be interested. wink

OK, mock me. I looked it up on the KGBO site and it wasn't even listed. I used the app and there was no inventory info.

Now I see there is info on the site.

@Wierdo I believe they may be two different ones in fact. Check yours but it is probably their 8 year cask strength, or the one they call heavily peated. The one i got is a cs sherry matured one and I believe this one is a completely new expression.

@TracerBullet Thanks for sharing your Sagamore adventure, I heard of the Penny's proof release on Whiskcast and thought the idea was a rather neat way to introduce their own make. The dude in the pink bonnet in your crowd photo is my favorite btw.

Lord all you MOFO's I mean all this FOMO about the Old Ezra BS. I've had my eye on it as we get little Heaven hill juice, the SAQ had a listing for pre-sale on Thursday, they had well over a 100 bottles so I wasn't too concerned with picking one up right away, especially since non-exclusive bourbons don't sell out fast here. Lo and behold no bottles available yesterday and today the listing has been pulled from the site? Very weird and suspicious.

@Riks I think this will be the one you have

royalmilewhiskies.com/kilkerran-8-year-old…

It's the latest 8 year old cask strength, released this month. I didn't realise they'd put the latest release in Sherry casks. Previous releases had been bourbon cask.

@Wierdo that’s the one! I did try it at the whisky show and really liked it. Also really loved their Longrow 21, but...

@Wierdo @RikS that Kilkerran sounds delicious. Someone shared this "Springbank Release News" recently - saying keep an eye out for the latest Local Barley. I said I'm more interested in the Kilkerran at nearly half the price! Look forward to your thoughts when you open your bottles gents. If you can't be bothered opening the link, the tasting notes are:

Nose: Waves of smoky bacon and sticky glazed ham are followed by dried fruit characteristics that give way to soft peat smoke.

Palate: Rich, fruity and spicy. Notes of ginger loaf, fresh ripe cherries and sultanas. Hints of cloves, dark chocolate and a refreshing menthol note.

Finish: A lasting finish of nostalgic buttered brown toast, espresso and ashy peat smoke. A lasting, earthy character reminiscent of the distillery’s dunnage warehousing.

@Wierdo @RikS - Gotta love that price as well! I've still not cracked my bottle of the last CS edition (bourbon casks) but would have been eager to snap up this sherry one had I not blown my budget!

RikS replied

@RianC @Wierdo I agree. Had I too not been budget-conscious, I'd have liked to buy two in fact - one to crack and one to stash... However, I'm not even sure I'd have been able to get my hands on two. My whisky store just got one, and seems it's already noted as "out of stock" just about everywhere...!

@RikS - I find it amusing how the sherry ones flew off the shelves but the bourbon ones hung around ... Luckily, I tend to prefer bourbon matured whisky stuck_out_tongue

4 years ago 3Who liked this?

RikS replied

@RianC I suppose I like both. In a non smokey/peaty whisky, I appreciate both depending on mood and the type of 'sweetness' I seek. E.g. th Kavalan ex-bourbon is VERY bourbon, but it's great (when in that mood).

However, I often find that in peaty and smokey expressions, I really appreciate that extra layer that comes with a sherry finishing - and at times also a wine cask.

I suppose that's what got me hooked on a number of those 'distiller's edition' like the Caol Ila one and Lagavulin too.

I took possession of 3 whiskies tonight (and many samples too grinning )

  • Alberta Premium 20 Year Old
  • Elijah Craig 12 Year Old (with the age statement on the front +1 )
  • Jack Daniel’s Barrel Proof Single Barrel

BUT I managed to offload 5 bottles so my move to downsize or Marie Kondo my collection is going in the right direction.

@OdysseusUnbound I took possession of 5 full size bottles via several sources today, and I only dispensed a half bottle worth of samples and a full bottle of Elijah Craig 12 YO with the age statement on the front, so things are NOT going in the direction I need.

Looking forward to opening Old Ezra 7 YO barrel proof soon.

@Hewie sadly the latest Springbank local barley evaporated from shelves upon release. It's becoming a depressing situation that Springbank special releases are now jumped on by flippers. Luckily so far the 12 year old cask strength doesn't do so well at auction unless you've got one of the early releases.

Not specifically a purchase of mine. But it was my birthday yesterday and I had a couple of bottles of whisky. My first bottle of Green Spot (I'm just starting to get into Irish Pot Still after @RianC sent me a sample of Powers Lane) and my first Glenallachie which was the new 15 year old Sherry cask, I always feel that 15 years is generally a really good age for a sherry matured scotch.

I did not plan on picking up any whisky this week but the SAQ had a sale. Thus through buying a stash of wine for the holidays I gained a lot of points which I used towards the purchase of a Ben Nevis 10.

This usually sells out quickly when in stock, so figured it's now or never...a 50$ discount is a good motivator as well.

I also swapped a bottle of Port Charlotte Scottish Barley for one of the newer PC Islay barley 2011
