@bwmccoy Not sad for the person who likely got it as a gift or paid $30 for it at the time and just made a small fortune...

If I won the lottery I'd be bidding on all of these dusties. Not a big fan of CR myself but I know a few people who would be happy to be around when I opened them...on condition that they left me a sample and relieved me of the bottle...

One can dream...

$3500 for Crown Royal? 35 bucks would be more realistic. Who are these people?

@BlueNote I think it was bottled in the 1950s. While I've never tasted '50s Crown, I have tasted '60s and '70s and its pretty great - but not $3500 great. If that person was purchasing as an investment, I think they'd have a hard time making a profit on that one.

@talexander If I was ever tempted to spend that kind of money on whisky it would be on some spectacular Port Ellen or Brora. Not gonna happen unless there is very substantial lottery win, and for that I'd actually have to start buying lottery tickets.

@BlueNote I have to preface this with "I have never tried any Port Ellen release" but I did think it amusing when I was on Islay a couple years ago and we were talking to a local Ileach about the reopening of Port Ellen and how it was sad it closed in the first place. His response was, "Well you don't close the distilleries that are making good scotch!".

@TracerBullet Well, that's the hard cold reality. The reason Diageo closed Port Ellen was because it was the lowest selling scotch of their three Islay distilleries - and with the sharp decline in sales in the '80s they couldn't afford to keep them all going.

@TracerBullet - I’ve been fortunate to own 2 bottles of Port Ellen (1 from SMWS and 1 from The Old Malt Cask). This was many years ago (2010-2012 timeframe) before bottle prices were what they are today. No way I can’t afford Port Ellen at today’s prices.

Anyway, both bottles I owned were superb and unlike any other Islay whisky. Both had a burnt sage note that I loved. Obviously, I’m tasting them 20+ years after they were made, so I can’t speak to whether people in the 1980’s thought Port Ellen was good or bad, but I found Port Ellen to be unique and different, but very good quality.

It will be many years before this question will be answered, but will the new Port Ellen taste the same as it did before? Will it have that burnt sage note? Will it be a better or worse quality spirit than it was before? Will it be affordable? joy Time will tell.

@talexander, me thinks someone got clumsy and entered one too many zeroes on that CR bid.

@bwmccoy I had the chance to try a dram at the Islay Hotel but it was a bit pricey so I didn't pull the trigger. I'd still love to have the chance to try it at some point but since the prices keep going up, I guess that will not happen. As far as the new Port Ellen tasting like the old; I am thinking no. The original stills were destroyed so unless they have enough data to recreate them, that will be one strike.

@talexander, I was following the prices and couldn't believe what I was seeing....I was thinking Diageo got into it .... Older Canadian whisky prices are now totally obfuscated !

When We visited the Bahamas about a decade ago, @nosebleed and I used our boys night out to go off the resort to a shack in “the fry”. There, we shared a drink called “double vision” because of the amount of rum it contained. It was on that trip that I first saw(but did not buy) overproof rum.

Well, tonight these for dropped off. It’s not double or triple vision, but 3 bottles. Smith and Cross was introduced to me by @victor in (I think) 2015 and I’ve polished off 2 bottles of it because it makes a great banana flambé. I had a single spare after letting one go to a good home, and have been saddened by the drought In its availability. So glad it’s back again and I made sure to stick up.

This is great for sipping too, but it shines in flambés. One bottle is destined to be part of a friend’s Birthday gift...

@talexander although I'm in a similar precarious economic situation (restaurant biz), like @Nozinan, if you run dry I also know a guy that can tide you over ;-)

@cricklewood - lovely looking haul!

I picked up an early bday present for my partner of Tanqueray no. 10 this week - I'm keen to see the difference all the citrus makes to the standard Tanq. When she opens it, of course!

Father's day coming up and I've been able to wangle a bottle of Bunnahabhain Toiteach A Dha from my, er, kids stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye This will be my first taste of peated Bunna but I've wanted to try it for ages. Any here had it and, if so, whats your verdict?

@RianC I've never tried the Tanq10 but quite enjoyed the standard, look forward to your observations.

Wow I know the UK is progressive when it comes to liquor sales but didn't know under 5's were allowed to purchase spirits, well I suppose if you say it's for your da' laughing

I believe I reviewed the Toiteach A Dha, it was at a tasting but I quite enjoyed it, really meaty, tobacco elements from the sherry. If i had another crack at it, my score would probably move from 87 to higher

Why?

Because they were there!

My wife went to drop off a prescription and saw these for sale at the pharmacy. It has been next to impossible to get these and in addition to wiping down Almost everything that comes into the house, I need these to wipe down equipment after leaving a patient’s home.

Since March I have been able to purchase 2 bottles and got a couple donated to me. This should keep me and a colleague or two going for a while, hopefully until they become more readily available.

I will be pouring something to celebrate tonight!

@OdysseusUnbound yes, some are wetter than others... I always pour whatever is left from the used bottle into the next bottle. Since some are Chlorox and some are Lysol it becomes a blended wipe.

Actually, I do envy you for locating these.

Glenlivet 18. Ahem. Never tried any 'livet and can't say the NAS or under 18's have any great appeal. This though gets rave reviews and I think I will enjoy the style. Most of my on-line usuals give this 90 or above so, yes, it's a blind gamble but one I can justify.

As it happens, I had to renew my car insurance today but to my genuine amazement I was offered it at £75 less than last years. Which also happened to be the cost of this bottle. Spooky! laughing
