Whisky for a Wedding???

2 12

Dear all,

I'm getting married later this year and due to my future wife's Scottish nationality myself and my groomsmen will be in full highland dress for the special day. Down to a combination of luck and perseverance on my part all my groomsmen are now also whisky lovers, so all the Sporrans will be containing a hip flask for the odd tipple, purely for warmth of course. ;-)

I would like to purchase a whisky, something special as a treat for myself and them to have in there hip flasks but I'm looking for some suggestions. It's a December wedding in Yorkshire so it may need to be a bit of a warmer, although two of them are not fans of anything peaty.

Having perused many reviews and discussions going on here since joining this community yesterday I've discovered what a wealth of information is here, so wondered if I could tap into a bit of the knowledge that is out there for a few recommendations?

Look forward to hearing from you.

As some of your group are not peat lovers I'd suggest a Glengoyne. They have a great range and none of them have any peat flavours at all. The 12 yo is very good indeed or if you want to pay a little more the 17yo is excellent too. The distillery is described as the most beutiful in Scotland which ties in nicely with a wedding. Congratilations and best wishes for your big day. Cheers.

@AbunadhBatch29 P.s. I was born and grew up in Leeds myself so i know how chilly it can be in December! A Glengoyne filled hip flask should warm the cockles nicely.

@IainVH @Jean-Luc Glengoyne isn't a whisky I have tried yet but it sounds like a possible so I will certainly look into that and I'm sure for such a day I can stretch the budget a little, so may have to sample the 17 and 21 year olds (purely to enable me to make an informed decision of course).

@markjedi1 I like your thinking and I have been tempted to go for something I know and love, and as @Jean-Luc points out it would certainly warm things up! At the moment I'm feeling like trying something different for the big day, so I'm thinking a new dram will be called for.

Cheers for the suggestions so far!

I wouldn't limit either myself or them to just one whisky. I would offer Highland Park 18, Glenfarclas 15, and Lagavulin 12.

Highland Park 18, Glencadam 14 Oloroso Finish and Old Pulteney 17 would be my recommendations. I would thoroughly recommend a trip to Wrights Wine and Whisky in Skipton, too. It's a veritable aladdin's cave of Whiskies (and wine, obviously), they always have a decent selection of bottles open for nosing and tasting, and the staff are very helpful and informative. I get up there about once a month from Halifax, it is definitely worth the trek.

Anyway, whatever you go with all the best for your big day. Slainte!

@Victor thanks for the suggestions, I'll probably just go for the one, as going to pick one special one for the day rather than several, but I welcome the selection and after doing a bit of reading about each they all sound very good in different ways. It's good to have a range of recommendations to give consideration to. :-)

@smokeybarrels also many thanks for your recommendations, you've suggested three whiskys I haven't tried so will do a bit of investigating. I'm tempted by the Glencadam especially due to the Oloroso finish. Cheers for the recommendation about Wrights Wine and Whisky, I've had a look on their website and it definitely looks like its worth the little drive out. Thanks for the best wishes as well.

All the recommendations are much appreciated and I'll post on here to let you know once I take the plunge and decide which fabulous whisky to go for.

I would go for Highland Park 18, an excellent dram, not too smoky and a very good allrounder.

@AbunadhBatch29 I'll second the recommendation for Wrights at Skipton. Smokey put me onto this shop and it really is a whisky treasure trove. I felt like a small child in a sweet shop when I visited! Cheers.

I would suggest that you want stay away from whisky that your guests will have in there flasks, the past couple of weddings i have been at Highland Park and Dalmore seemed quite common. Another vote for the Glengoyne 21 If thats to much cash Tomintoul 21 or if you want to push the boat out Glenfarclas 30 is a good shout.
