Whisky Storage/Display

Hey all, I'm curious to get the opinions of people with larger collections. I'm looking to build some custom shelving for my collection and I wondered if anyone had any experience doing this or any feelings regarding their own storage/display system. Specifically I'm looking for opinions on how many bottles deep people store them on a shelf, shelf depth, creative solutions like shelves on runners, etc. etc. Nuts and bolts sort of stuff regarding how people feel most effectively bottles are displayed for easy access. I'm looking to be able to see every bottle, at least enough of it to identify it and be able to grab any bottle I please, in a relatively small space (Reasonably large closet) with a relatively large collection (100+ bottles after about 3 years and growing steadily) Pictures welcome!

@FederalNate Funny you should ask my wife and I shared a cabinet until I purchased a custom built oak and glass cabinet. I do not recomend going this route for everyone, but my collection is pretty big and I wanted something nice and a lifetime of use. I measured all of the tallest bottles that I have and went 2 to 3 inches to allow for clearence to lift bottles out without knocking into others. Sorry I don't have exact measurements or photos. Hope this was helpful. :)

@FederalNate I'm remodeling a basement room for my whisky. I've been looking online for photos of Scottish/Irish/English pubs/bars/tasting rooms for ideas. i45.tinypic.com/10sb43t.jpg is pretty close to what I want to do. This is in Edinburgh. I figure 3 bottles deep. Adjustable shelves with varying heights for taller bottles. I plan on using it here for the next 30+ years so it'll be strong.

@Wodha If you are planning on storing your bottles three deep, you do need to keep in mind the weight of the bottles as it can be taxing. I store mine two bottles deep, but when I invited my installer back for a dram or two, he was concerned about the weight of things so he added some reinforcement to the mounting brackets. I did install mirrored backs to the cabinets that really enhances the look of things.

@cgrface I'm hoping the mirrored backs in my cabinet will make my whisky collection look bigger. The L.E.Ds will not add extra heat to the collection but will allow people to read lables. :)

Good call on the LED's PMessinger. I have a low voltage lighting system in my cabinets, and it seems I'm always changing bulbs. It's relaxing having a dram (or two) by the fireside with the only additional lighting from the bar cabinets.

I'd like to post some pics of my escape, as my wife is fond of referring it. Excuse my ignorance, but what is the best way to do so?

@cgrface The omly way I know is with a cell phone camera then send the picture to your E-mail, once there set up a folder for those pictures. Name the folder someting easy to find. Then upload them to your whiskyconnosr account. My wife had to help me since she works in computers. Hope this is helpful. :)

@cgrface Hmm... no time now to pursue this further. Seems like the connosr account only allows you to add/change your avatar so I won't hijack this thread further until I figure this out. Im not a IT guy by trade.

@cgrface Your link actually did work, it's just that you didn't put a space between your "test..." and the URL. Here's the fixed link:

A unique way to present your collection could involve getting some high quality shots taken in an appropriate setting of each of the bottles, and then turning it into a custom-made catalogue. You could avoid the immediate necessity to obtain expensive solution for the exposition, but easily impress your guests with a professional catalogue. For this holiday season I've ordered greeting cards and store presenting magazines from www.print24.com , and that worked well for our presentations.
