Who's Been To The Speyside Whisky Festival?

So I am planning a vacation this year (the first vacation I've ever had by myself!) and am looking at attending this festival in early May. Never been to Scotland (I'm Canadian) - and am extremely excited. I plan to doing a lot of distillery tours as well, plus road trips through the countryside. Anyone been? Any tips, recommendations, things to avoid? Will it disappoint me, or exceed my expectations?

The Speyside Whisky Festival is a very busy time here with over 200 events. There are lots of tastings, distillery tours, music, whisky and food tastings - the list goes on. Also, distilleries not usually open to the public take visitors. The best thing is that there are many bus tours which cuts out any drink drive issues. The festival web site goes live for bookings on 21/Jan at 7pm UK time (www.spiritofspeyside.com). There is usually a huge rush to buy tickets at the start. Accommodation may be a little bit difficult to get now but not impossible. Bottom line is that this is one of the most fun times to come to Speyside with so much to do and that you can't do at other times but some people find it a bit too busy. As this is your first time and you are coming on your own I suggest it's a great option for you.

Agree with Whiskylord. It's a great time to visit Speyside, lots of events on and a great atmosphere, you won't be dissapointed! Let me know if you need help finding accommodation as I'm sure most B&B's and Hotels are already fully booked. Have a great time at the festival!

@tuminds - thank you very much! I'm going to wait and see how much the tickets are first, then budget it out and start contacting places. Have already scouted a few that look great! Exciting!

Well, I couldn't wait - and I was afraid all the hotels would be booked up - and the ones I wanted were! In fact, the closest hotel in my budget I could find was in Elgin, so I jumped on it. But now my hotels, rental car and flights are all booked! Now I just wait until 2pm EST on Saturday to buy my festival tickets.....soooooooooo excited........

And my festival tickets are booked! Tastings include Glenfarclas and Suntory; distillery tours include Macallan, Glenfiddich, Glenlivet and Balvenie - and numerous dinners (including opening night dinner and awards) and other fun stuff!

@talexander Excellent! Did you mange to book your accommodation and taxi vouchers too? Might be worthwhile if you're tasting lots of whiskies ;)

Hope we can meet and have a dram together. Enjoy the festival!

@tuminds - yes, it would be great to meet! I was a little late booking my accomodations, so I'm out in Eglin at the Crerar Eight Acres Hotel. Though I have a rental car (and will need it coming from Elgin every day) I did buy some vouchers just in case.
