I don't have a ritual, but I always make sure I've drunk some water and I'm not dehydrated as it affects my palate and I never taste after a meal, as you mention, because I also find that can dull my palate.

I am sure there is going to be a good varied amount of answers to this topic.. My routine is as follows.. Tasting is usually around early evening before meal time.. Simply because of work.. Each tasting is done at full strength, from first pour to last sip it is usually around 20-30 mins, older whisky usually takes longer, notes are taken constantly, once reviewed I usually try again within 24 hours but initial notes usually remain as my review.. Water is rarely added, if it is I will say so..

How do you go about writing a whisky review?
My guess is that we all have some similar and certainly some different strategies when we write our marks.
Do you have one or several drams? Specific time of day? Rituals in preparation? und so weiter...
Myself I sample the whisky at least a couple of times taking notes each time. Usually during the late afternoon and preferably not directly after I've eaten. I don't do anything specific to prepare my palate. I have about 2cl each time and dilute with water at least once.
It has become a ritual of sorts. I always sit in my sofa and try to rid the enviroment of distractions before i begin. Usually it takes a good 20 minutes and thats not counting the time I let the whisky rest in the glass before commencing.
What about you?
