When visiting the Auchentoshan Distillery, you get the opportunity to bottle your own from two casks. Obviously I brought one of each. The youngest that you can currently try is bourbon hogshead #49 that was distilled on the 18th January 2001 and a thus at the time of bottling a 13 Year Old. I admit to being somewhat worried about the young age, but that was unfounded.
The nose is very sweet and bursts with lime and icing sugar. It has a slight soury and bitter side, as if from grapefruit. Lemongrass and a hint of coconut. Excellent aperitif if you ask me.
On the palate, this is textbook Auchentoshan with loads of citrus. Now it is both lime and lemon that rule, supported by ginger, liquorice and a good dose of white pepper. Vanilla, obviously, is present as well.
The finish is surprisingly long.
Do not confuse simplicity with mediocrity!
