I loved the classic Bourbon Cask 15YO Single Barrel. I found it a very slow-drinking, relaxing and contemplative dram. So very keen to see what its European Sherry Cask sibling does.
Nose: Immediate hit is classic Balvenie vanilla. Leaving it for a bit starts to reveal red and black fruits. I get blackcurrant and raspberry in particular - quite sharp and mouth-watering. But a delicate underlay of vanilla and honey is always there in the background. Very nice.
Palate: Thick and oily, with initial lavender and slightly spicey. Melts away into blackcurrant, red berries and something that tastes like strawberry flavoured marshmallow. It has a very strong summer fruit profile - and is much sweeter than on the nose but thankfully not overly so. Honey, vanilla and beeswax meld everything together. Sweet yet subtle; complex yet approachable. I really like this!
Finish: Incredibly long. Fruit flavours remain for several minutes, and I even got a slight smoky hint for a short time.
I do find Balvenie to be pretty reliable and this is no exception. Is it as good as the similarly priced 17YO Double-Wood? Just about I would say. I need to try the 21YO Port Cask at some point.

Just got to add - I said the finish was long but half an hour later I can now taste extreme oak-wood tannins. Mad, but great!
