BIG BEERS that rock your world?

Thank you, everybody, for all of your two cents on the topic of rums. It was very informative! Now, I'd love to hear your take on beer. What are your favorites? Do you like to mix your whisky with beer? What beers would, do you think, make for a great whisky, if distilled? As for me, I love big stouts, imperial stouts as well as some tripels and quads from Belgium (Val Dieu Grand Cru is one of my favorites). I think it would be very interesting to get whisky out of some of them.

In the US, Founders Brewery is definately my top pick. The breakfast stout and KBS are both delicious. Also, Blackstone in Nashville, TN and Straight to Ale in Huntsville, AL are the two best breweries in the southeast that I've had. Blackstone makes world class dark beers and a brown ale, STA makes the best tripel in the states and a great hefeweizen. But those are regionally only for sale in the south US. Founders is definately my fave nationally distributed beer, they're in Michigan. Rogue also makes great beer and they distribute internationally. (you'll notice my preference for big, dark beer). Then there is the delicious Twin Evil gose. Sour beer is delicious when done correctly.

For now, I Just mention Rodenbach Grand Cru. I LOVE Rodenbach since I was 16 and I still do. It is sour and it is sweet. It is Belgian and you should try it before you die.

It would be really interesting if someone distilled dark beer and then matured it for 10 years in some ex-Ardbeg casks and then in Sherry casks. I wonder if that would create an even darker and richer character of whisky.

I'm a big fan of beer aswell. Founder's brewery is always a winner for me. "all day ipa" and "breakfast stout" being two excellent choices. Also current limited edition "azacca" is top of the line!

My favorite ipa right now is clown shoes "monastic" made with Belgian yeast.

Like with whisky i like BIG beers with attitude. Stout or bitter ipa. I'm not a huge fan of weisen or sour

At least once in your life you will find the opportunity to taste the beers of Westvleteren. They are brewed in a monastery . Especially Westvleteren 12 is a great one. Maybe it is the greatest beer on earth. I do not know. It is hard to get and it is expensive for a beer. Imagine the heaven opens up while the angels are singing ... Okay, I am exaggerating....Well, someone once wrote this review about Westvleteren 12. He also mentions Rochefort 10, which is a little more easy too buy.

Bottle. Molasses, fruit cake, raisins, caramel, port wine, subtle Christmas spice, complex. A- Brown color, cloudy liquid, tan head. T- Complex, raisins, subtle booze, caramel, molasses, prunes. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, complex finish. Pretty much lives up to the hype. Way better than Bernardus 12 and right along side Rochefort 10. Maybe not the best beer in the world but worth the experience and certainly a must try beer. Excellent stuff. The greedy me wants a whole case now to age and try over the years. Superb, superb, superb

Belgium is the place to be for best beers in the world. It is Scotland for beer adepts.

@NamBeist I agree ) I've had a few quads and I love them.I don't like light beers, I like my dessert-type beers ) with a lot of body to them. I've had Rochefort 10 and it's delicious, but I still prefer Val Dieu Grand Cru to it.

@NamBeist I've tried Grand Cru Rodenbach and it's really interesting. Unlike anything I've ever tried. It's really like apple cider vinegar and sour worms with a touch of caramel=) Definitely, to be enjoyed in summer=) Thanks!

@casualtorture I'm drinking Founders KBS right now and it's delicious. It's like chocolate milk spiked with bourbon with dense vanilla cake soaked right in it. And the flavor reminds me a lot of Irish coffee (which is spiked with whisky and topped with whipped cream). That's a great find. However, it is slightly harsh in terms of the alcohol towards the finish.

I have enjoyed a fruit beer from the region of Bruxelles, Belgium this sunny weekend. Its name is 3 Fonteinen Intensief Red. It tastes like cherry pie, and vanilla. It is an artisan beer. I wonder If it can be bought in the USA or Russia. Well, it is sweet and sour at the same time, my favorite beer combination. Enjoy the summer time, enjoy Intensief Red. Remember 3 Fonteinen. They make excellent beers, all of them.

Here we go: everyday beer 'pils' Maes.

For something special dark beer Rochefort 6 or 8 or 10. I prefer the 8, my wife prefers the 6. A good line-up for the evening is 1x6, 3x8 and 1x10. The 10 will send you to bed on a little cloud :) It's a nice tasting experience to taste Rochefort 8 'fresh' out of the shop (6 months in the bottle) and compare it with a bottle close to expiration date (24 months in the bottle) it evolves quite a lot in the bottle.

Westvleteren 12 is wonderful, but overpriced. It has a real chocolate and tannin (wine) flavour to it, but I can get 6 bottles of Rochefort 8 for 1 Westvleteren 12.......

Korenwolf Gulpener (white beer) is one to go for in the summer, in the US it has a lot of similarity with Celis White (Texas).

Chimay Blue and St. Bernardus Abt 12 are also fabulous quadrupels. True dessert beers. I do hope, though, they aren't sweet due to the sugar which is added before bottling the beers. As for German alternatives which are slightly lighter, but are very flavorful nonetheless, I LOVE Celebrator by Ayinger and Schneider Weisse TAP6. Those are superbly delicious being bottled at a higher strength.

Agree about that Celebrator! delicious dopplebock. My fave German beer has to go to Weinstephaner though for their hefeweizen. Even though I do prefer big, dark beers, that hefe is so refreshing.

I was into beer before I got into whiskey.

My all time favs: Saison Dupont Vieille Provision (best in 70cl bottles), Rochefort 10, Westvlerteren Blonde, The Kernel 1890 Export Stout, Girardin Gueuze Black Label.

I also love a boilermaker, usually with a nice craft lager. I find beer can bring out the flavour of a bourbon. Also like Anchor Steam with a bourbon.
