Bowmore Small Batch

Bowmore Small Batch was initially launched in 2012 under the name “Small Batch Reserve” but was renamed “Small Batch” one year later. It is entirely matured in first-fill and second-fill ex-bourbon casks and appears to be vatted in limited quantities; however I could not find any batch number on my bottle.

The nose is lightly smoky, with plenty of cereal and milk flavours. Later on there are notes of lemons, vanilla, as well as a touch of cinnamon.

The palate is light-bodied and smoky. The cereal and vanilla flavours are back, together with wood spice, a good dose of salt and followed by a whiff of menthol.

The finish is of medium length. Smoke and vanilla flavours combine for a well balanced ending.

I was positively surprised by this Bowmore. I loved the malty and milky nose with the soft smoke in the background, and the palate – although a lightweight – manages to convincingly pair up fruity and salty elements. This is rather well done and a good example of a more modern version of Bowmore. Works for me!

A few weeks ago I received a box with some Bowmore chocolates, which included a miniature of the Bowmore Small Batch. I had tried it before at a whisky festival and again when trying the chocolate, but kept a little to try it once more and write a proper note. The Small Batch is 100% bourbon matured.

The nose is very malty (you can actually smell the barley) before it turns fruity. Grapes, peach, stewed rhubarb, apple and a touch of grapefruit. Hint of cinnamon and gingerbread. Honey and vanilla custard. The peat is hardly noticeable. Just a very light smoky edge. Fresh and very accessible.

It is light and somewhat creamy on the palate, soft on the smoke (although that grows bigger quickly) and very fruity. Again the fruit from the nose, but with a slightly tropical edge. A touch of oak, loads of vanilla, a drop of honey and finally a nice pinch of salt. But it is mostly somewhat tropical.

The finish is somewhat short to my taste, on smoke, and a bit minty.

A surprisingly ‘young’ and accessible Bowmore. Spring whisky in a smoky jacket. Not even 40 EUR.
