I was recently a guest at the whisky festival in Toulouse and ran into my French companion Xavier who pressed this sample into my hand. It contains a 28-year-old Laddie that was bottled by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society for Feis Ile 2020. It spent no less than 28 long years in a cask. Hello, there! What a divine nose. A bit old school. Tropical fruit, eucalyptus, balsamic... really delicious! We may be on Islay, but this might as well have been a Speysider. There is hardly any peat here. All the more fruit. And something metallic, too, as if it were poured from a can. Beautiful! Nice and oily and full-bodied, immediately sweet on peach, mashed banana, apricot and pineapple, but with a nice, smoky touch this time. Yes... wonderfully warm and fascinating. The finish is nothing short of beautiful. Long, sweet, spicy, satisfying. A special release, if you know that only 91 bottles were filled at the time. Thank you, Xavier! C'était très sympathique.
