Octomore hardly needs in introduction. It is distilled at Bruichaddich and pretends to be the most heavily peated malt on earth (remember the Octomore 05.1/1_169 with a ppm level of 169). This one has a modest level of ppm in comparison with its 80.5ppm. It is the first release of a 10 Year Old Octomore.
The surprisingly creamy nose offerst sweet smoke and lots of mint at first. Then some juniper berries and hazelnuts kick in. Reminds me a bit of gin, in fact. It has a metallic edge. Then all kinds of garden herbs appear: thym, chervil, basil. Then milk chocolate, sweet malt, honey and citrus. Very, very nice. And not a peat bomb. This is so much more than just peat in your face.
Wonderfully creamy on the palate, but now the sweetness clearly loses ground against a grand smokiness with coastal elements. Ashes, seaweeds, sweet peat again. White fruit (mostly green apples, but also some grapefruit) give it a sweet and sour jacket. The nuts make it sweeter than originally expected. It swings back and forth, but end in balance.
On the very long and smoky finish, the fruit fades gently to leave only ashes and peat.
A grand Octomore that does not disappoint (not even diluted, although it does not needit). Thanks, Kris!
