Cadenhead is one of Scotland’s oldest bottlers, founded by William Cadenhead in 1842. It has been in the hands of the Mitchell family, who also own Springbank and Glengyle, for over 40 years. A couple of years ago, they launched the Black Label series, which included this 22 years old Caol Ila, bottled at drinking strength. The nose starts fairly soft. Some maritime elements (seaweed, celp and a lonely oyster) precede a nice dose of vanilla, caramel and lime juicy. Classic to be sure, but that makes is so good. Typical Coal Ila nose, just the way I like it. The body leaves something to be desired, but the taste is just fine. Some candied ginger, loads of pepper and a pinch of nutmeg. Liquorice too and lots of it. Reminds me a bit of those sticks I used to chew as a kid. The citrus is more pronounced now and is joined by some young apples. The smokiness is rather modest. Nice and long finish on pepper and vanilla. Rather soft nose, but on the palate and especially in the finish, this malt expresses itself. Thanks, JP.
