By now we know that 1997 was a great year for Clynelish. This one was distilled just a little earlier and bottled by Signatory in their beautiful decanters. It matured on a refill sherry butt that yielded no less than 590 bottles. Refill? Sure? The color could have fooled me.

Oh, my! The first whiff is scary! The nose starts off rather sulphury on struck matches. Fairly hearty too. A bit meaty, if you know what I mean. Yesterday’s barbecue. Luckily that only lingers for a moment and then the fruit kicks in. Think strawberry, raspberry, rhubarb and toffee apples. Give it a few more moments to breath and you will also find freshly polished leather, sultanas and a jam of greengages. Wow, this is a complex nose!

It is very oily, almost syrupy, on the palate. Powerful, wonderfully sweet and very spicy. Think ginger, black pepper and nutmeg. The same fruit as on the nose, but in a wonderful stew. A bit of candlewax? Oh, this is good. The second sip adds plums and cherries. Quite punch! This is a powerhouse.

The finish is very long and remains spicy and sweet on a fruity stew with plums in the lead.

If the nose did not start with so much sulpher, then this was probably one of the best Clynelish I have ever tried. Now, do not get me wrong, this is still very, very good. Recommended (and you can still easily find it for around 100 EUR).
